I happen to be listening to the song right now on my ipod and i love how he uses so much emotion when singing this, it really shows that he's not like the others and he knows how men are supposed to be but he doesn't want to, so he asks "Should i be just like you, to be a man?" it makes the whole song so emotional and crazy awesome!
He might be being criticized for being depressed from being hurt emotionally, which means he's showing his emotions, which isn't what a man is supposed to do in our society.
Or he might be afraid of taking chances. Whatever the case, he's not acting how men are "supposed" to act (brave and fearless).
"Call me sad, but how would you ever know? Maybe you'll be there, but just not today." The people doing this to him haven't been in the position he has, and once they are, they'll be hypocrites because they'll be acting the same way.
