I can't believe there aren't more comments on this song, this is definitely one of my favorite Boys Like Girls songs. I think the meaning of it is pretty obvious.
I can totally relate to this song. Someone who's been hurt for so long that they don't know how to handle it when someone who won't hurt them comes along. I LOOOOOVE their older stuff!
i love this song, and i cant believe more people don't like it, i can relate to this song, because like me, i think that his life used to be great, but then he realized that he had been blind to so many things, then it seemed that everything was going wrong, and just when he think he had narrowed down to the few friends he actually had, one of his closest only friends left, hurt him, and he's given up.

I Basically think its about someone whos been hurt for so long & the only thing they know if pain.So when someone who comes along who wont hurt them & actually cares for them,They dont know how to handle that.because they have never got that love before.... Thats just what I think.
The guy in the song obviously is crushed and hurt, he is unable to feel anything but pain, so to make life bearable he became tolerant to it and constantly adapts it as his persona. He meets a girl who he wants to change his life, the last 2 lines of the song "I know how to feel You're the only way that I know how to feel" is a turn around, he only feels anything but pain when ever she is there.
Could it be that Martin was bullied when he was young? Maybe he wrote this song to express how he felt in his childhood.
