The dying light was nearly dead
By the time we reached the water's edge
We saw the river beating on the river bank
Oh the way that it held us in her river bed

It's cold, it's dark
It's not for people with uneasy hearts
But if you're with me on the other side
Strike up the band, we have survived

Oh do they beat that drum to get you back home
Or do they beat it to keep you away?

Don't be surprised at your regrets
Don't feel surprised that the water made you wet
There's a shallow down river where the water will forgive your soft skin
Your luke warm bets

Follow me
Oh follow me
Allow me to play the voyager
I'll try to keep you as dry as the hollowed out tree
That you would be wrapped in another man's fur

So take a dive
Oh take a dive
Oh take it out on the stepping stones that make the water lie
So take a dive
Oh take a dive
Take that hair out of your damned eyes
While the waves are away at the ???

Do they beat that drum to get you back home
Or do they beat it to keep you away?

Will you burn your bridges down
Singing la la la la la la la
Will you burn your bridges down
Singing la la la la la la la
Will you bang your drum to the brazen sound
Singing la la la la la la la
Will you turn away
How can you turn away

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
