Bang Your Drum Lyrics
The dying light was nearly dead
By the time we reached the water's edge
We saw the river beating on the river bank
Oh the way that it held us in her river bed
It's cold, it's dark
It's not for people with uneasy hearts
But if you're with me on the other side
Strike up the band, we have survived
Oh do they beat that drum to get you back home
Or do they beat it to keep you away?
Don't be surprised at your regrets
Don't feel surprised that the water made you wet
There's a shallow down river where the water will forgive your soft skin
Your luke warm bets
Follow me
Oh follow me
Allow me to play the voyager
I'll try to keep you as dry as the hollowed out tree
That you would be wrapped in another man's fur
So take a dive
Oh take a dive
Oh take it out on the stepping stones that make the water lie
So take a dive
Oh take a dive
Take that hair out of your damned eyes
While the waves are away at the ???
Do they beat that drum to get you back home
Or do they beat it to keep you away?
Will you burn your bridges down
Singing la la la la la la la
Will you burn your bridges down
Singing la la la la la la la
Will you bang your drum to the brazen sound
Singing la la la la la la la
Will you turn away
How can you turn away
By the time we reached the water's edge
We saw the river beating on the river bank
Oh the way that it held us in her river bed
It's not for people with uneasy hearts
But if you're with me on the other side
Strike up the band, we have survived
Or do they beat it to keep you away?
Don't feel surprised that the water made you wet
There's a shallow down river where the water will forgive your soft skin
Your luke warm bets
Oh follow me
Allow me to play the voyager
I'll try to keep you as dry as the hollowed out tree
That you would be wrapped in another man's fur
Oh take a dive
Oh take it out on the stepping stones that make the water lie
So take a dive
Oh take a dive
Take that hair out of your damned eyes
While the waves are away at the ???
Or do they beat it to keep you away?
Singing la la la la la la la
Will you burn your bridges down
Singing la la la la la la la
Will you bang your drum to the brazen sound
Singing la la la la la la la
Will you turn away
How can you turn away

I think burn your bridges down is like cutting off from the world, so you're secluded on your own island. Singing la la la la la like you're happy about it or just don't care. Like finding salvation in being alone I guess.
I'm almost positive it's: Oh do they beat that drum to get you back home Or do they beat it to keep you away?

Christ...that's too lyrics I've heard "Do" as "till"
Thanks, changing it now. It's really hard to make out what Spencer / Dan are saying half the time. Took me about half an hour just to get all these.
...two*
I think the first line is actually "The dying LIGHT was almost dead." I think. The rest of the song is pretty comprehensible (as far as Wolf Parade songs go), but there are muddy patches.
Love this song, though. Reminds me a lot of "You Are a Runner..." and "I'll Believe in Anything," with the image of two people in love fleeing the rest of society.
mazin
The song is most certainly about 1 person turning away from another. They're burning their bridge with that person and wrapping themselves in another man’s fur so to speak. He seems to be offering some type of forgiveness though over time.
Also I'm almost positive the lyrics should be like so:
The dying light was nearly dead By the time we reached the water’s edge We saw the river beating on the river bank For the way that it held us in her riverbed
It’s cold, It’s dark It’s not for people with uneasy hearts But if you’re with me on the other side Strike up the band, we have survived
Oh do they beat that drum to get you back home? Or do they beat it to keep you away?
Don’t be surprised at your regrets Don’t be surprised that the water made you wet There’s a shallow down river where the water will forgive ya’ Soft skin, your lukewarm beds
Follow me, oh follow me Allow me to play the voyager I’ll try to keep as dry as the hollowed out tree That you would be wrapped in another man’s fur
So Take a Dive, Oh Take a Dive Oh take it out on the stepping stones that make the water rise So Take a Dive, Oh Take a Dive Take that hair… Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Take that hair out of your damned eyes While the waves an harangue and the sum you’ll pay
Do they beat that drum to get you back home? Or do they beat it to keep you away?
Will you burn your bridges down? Singing lalalalalalala Will you burn your bridges down? Singing lalalalalalala Will you bang your drum to the blazing sound? Singing lalalalalalala Will you turn away? How can you turn away?
This is such a unique and clever song. It's got almost a spooky feel to it. He's definitely bitter towards someone. At "Take a Dive" it's like he's pleading with someone to pull themselves together. But the last two lines just seem sad, like he's given up.
PLEASE CORRECT THE LYRICS
Plebian has 2 corrections that I'm sure are right.
and another that i noticed is
The Mystery Line seems to be: "While the waves are away at the Summer Delk Bay" That is very wrong, but I don't know that Plebian got it right either with "While the waves an harangue and the sum you’ll pay" Somebody needs to translate that mess. :)
I think its asking you whether the drum beat, the common masses, the culture draws you or repels you, or do the masses want you or want you gone? the answer is to bang YOUR drum. Im reminded of Shut up Im dreaming where Spencer asks 'why make a sound' no one will understand my dream anyways.
