Blinded by the Light Lyrics
As we all know this song was written and originally recorded by Bruce Springsteen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JEW5kG5GqU Go listen to it.
Everyone is putting too much thought into the meanings. I've read most of these posts that go back to 2005 and everyone wants to make it some deep song about drugs or some such.
Springsteen talked about this song in detail on an episode of VH1 Storytellers. A lot of the references are personal, to include people he knew or had met on the Boardwalks, or had grown up around, or were just direct personal references to himself: Madman drummers bummers - Vinnie "Mad dog" Lopez, the first drummer in the E Street Band. Indians in the summer - Bruce's little league baseball team as a kid. In the dumps with the mumps - being sick with the mumps. Boulder on my shoulder - a "chip" on his shoulder. Some all hot, half-shot, heading for a hot spot, snapping fingers clapping his hands - Being a "know it all kid growing up, who doesn't really know anything." "Silicone Sister" - Bruce mentions that this is arguably the first mention of breast implants in popular music - a dancer at one of the local strip joints in Asbury Park.
He wrote this song in his bedroom, primarily using a rhyming dictionary. Or as Bruce put it, "the rhyming dictionary was on fire."

Now quit thinking about it so much.
----:)
And, on the VHI DVD, Bruce says, "It's a good example of WHY I never took drugs...Imagine what it would be if I HAD". He mentions how people think it is "rolled up like a dueche" and that is why it became popular...reference to female hygiene.

@interestingthoughts when you look it up it says Springsteen is the songwriter and first to release it in \'73 and Manfred Mann\'s band Earth Band release in \'76 was the one who made it #1 in the top 100.

i think the lyrics to this song have caused more confusion to the hoi polloi than just about any other. "is he saying 'wrapped up like a douche'?" hehehehe.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who hears this. It's an interesting mental image.

cough ahem.
While I think toastay has the best meaning for this song, my dad (Who was there man, there! when they came out) has informed me that this song didn't have any "intended" meaning at all, other than to be a filler song for concerts. Not to say it doesn't have meaning, obviously. But the meaning wasn't from feeling, is what I'm saying, it was mostly just a filler song.
Whether you believe it or not is up to you. But he knows classic rock.
K first thing, this song was written by Bruce Springsteen so and it was only a filler song for MMEB in concerts since it was a remake.
Sadly for Bruce, the song became more popular than the original so nobody listens to his no more.
Also, it probably does say douche in the song but the correct lyrics are deuce. Its like Stairway to Heaven where "It makes me wonder" only appears once in the lyrics yet is almost said after every verse.
I haven't a clue...I would love to know though? "Wrapped up like a douche, another roter in the night"...that is what I always thought they said. I guess I was wrong. What the hell does this song mean?
No, you are mistaken sorry. The song is about partying too hard with coke. 1.Blinded by the light = Pupils dilated 2.Runner = staying up through the night 3.Revved up like a duece = Wired 4. Tripped the merry - go round=Felt so wild 5. Told me I've got what it takes=meaning he's or she's so wild he can do the stuff without dying because it's so strong 6."I'll turn you on..."= Give you something (it's a slang i.e.Turn me on to a joint) 7.,Play the song with the funky break." = Play a song to groove too while they are wired. 8. checkin' out the weather charts to see if it was safe outside = Make sure there are no cops around 9. Early Burly asked me if I needed a ride = Someone early in the morning that wanted to pick him up because he was hitch hiking. 10. She got down but she never got tired = She's not wired anymore but she's not downed either 11. She's gonna make it through the night = She didn't O.D. The lyrics plainly state it, if you know slang.
not every song is about drugs, especially manfred mann

or it could be about a car wreck. blinded by the light= headlights or the sun runner=sum1 going to get help= revved up like a deuce= a deuce was a type of car. revved up like a deuce another runner in the night basically a runner is revving up a deuce to get help.

Some who was wired on coke driving a deuce coupe and wrecked into a merry-go-round while trying to figure this song out.
Yeah, I like this one the best! lol lol

Nothing in the song mentioned DRIVING the deuce. The gal was excited and/or high like a hot rot Deuce Coupe revving its engine for a race. I think tripped the merry-go-round means that he was high (tripping) while on the merry-go round and stumbled into the caliope (which is a pipe organ) that many old merry-go rounds had in the center of them.

Why don't you people ask the writer of the song, Mr. Bruce Springsteen, instead of pretending Manfred Mann wrote it?
I don't know what the author intended to convey. To me, honestly, I always just LOVED singing my heart to this song... I distinctly remember learning the lyrics and just feeling KEWL becuz I knew all the trippy words (gimme a break I was just about 14/15 yrs old. I always liked Bruce's version much better than Mann's...besides I'm a Philly native and Bruce & I were breathing the very same pollution.
this is just a good song with weird lyrics. whatever they mean its a catchy tune
