In Her Music Box Lyrics
"In Her Music Box" - the tale of a young girl who sits in the back seat of her wannabe pimp of a father's car, absorbing the explicit raps she hears coming out of the speakers. The song is not so much about neglect as it is examining the dichotomy between a young, inexperienced father and his impressionable child. As Slug says of the track, "The main point of it was to look at and speculate on how children at that age learn the art of escapism that as adults sets up for self-medicating and self-abuse."
thats what rhymesayers had to say about it. i loove this song
The guy is not necessarily a drug dealer and especially no pimp. He is just your average idiot who drives around all day simply because he has nothing else to do, b/c he has no job b/c his woman is the one doing the working. And this idiot drives around with his girl/kids in the backseat blasting the crap swear infested gangsta rap. I see this idiot everyday of my life. And I always feel so sorry for those kids sitting in the back seat with the shi*ty distorted bass blasing away at their little eardrums. Daddys and Mommies is just a plural because this is not one guy this is thousands of guys doing this and their stories and their lazy lives are all the same.
other than the obvious points this song makes, it really hits home with me because music has always been my "escape" as slug puts it and it keeps me on the up and up every day
Okay I'm trying to figure out what the story is here. At one point the girl refers to her dad being "important", and "The guy with the suit and tie they see at the court". But there is also a lot of obvious references to the family living out of their car. Why do the cops want to talk to him?
dope. It basically shows how children percieve things, regardless of what's going on around them. This little girl's dad is obviously a drug dealer or something, but the only thing the little girl really focuses on is the music and the treats she gets. I love how Slug referenced how when she says bitch it makes the dad laugh. It's a personal moment right there, it reminds me of my kids
Love the song, its my favorite one off of the album. It reminds me a little bit of my childhood, the whole part after the first chorus. Just parents that weren't ready to be parents don't really know what you'll pull out of the world.

I always looked at this as the father being a pimp, "Daddys drive around, Mommys work night shift" (notice the plural "Mommies")
The previously stated references to the lawyer at the court, the cops at the car wash, the father talking to people out of his window. And the daughter saying "bitch" when she omits all other curse words. Why might this be? My thought, the father calls his prostitutes "bitches".
Well, that's all I got. Slug + Ant = Atmosphere Atmosphere = The Shit The Shit = Slug + Ant There is a mathematical theorem somewhere that states the above, I just can't remember it.
Song is about the relationship between a father and his daughter. The lyrics show a Drug dealing father, well liked within his neighborhood "But at the car wash they treat him like the star that she sees" however he has legal troubles as he is always seen with his Lawyer, combating the Police. " The guy with the suit and tie they see at the court And it seems like he ain't tryin to talk to police"
The evidence towards him being a drug dealer, is the reference to "Daddy's office" meaning he does his income making within the refines of his car, typical of a drug dealer. Matching up with several references to smoking weed.
What the Artists, Slug is trying to convey is that the innocence of a young child under the constant bombardment of a societies view of negativity such as Drug dealing, law suits, unhealthy diet etc, can escape these negative features of life within the music box "Car Radio" she feels safe within the music, lost in her own world and instead of rebelling against the cruel life her father makes her live, Her special treatment of her; " And the lollipop she gets makes her feel like a big deal Not allowed to have it yet, gotta sit still Like the toy that she knows is gonna come with the kids meal She loves drive-thru food Health conscious Dad, he buys her the juice A little sip of soda builds the pride"
In essence, Music can be the sole solver of harships in life, through music she sees her dad as a star, and the main man in her life. Through music she is safe.
Daddy is a drug dealer. "They keep her distracted from the strangers' voices" , "Nu-uh, Papa cant roll a messy office"
"The guy with the suit and tie they see at the court" - obviously his lawyer
This song is about a little girl whose dad is a criminal of some sort ("the man with the suit and tie we see at the court", "the police treat him like the star that she sees", meaning they pay attention to him). To escape from the present, she listens to rap. The music teaches her that "daddies drive around, mommies work night shifts".
"Escape is a paradox because her childhood is a music box" means that she will grow up to be like her mom, working the night shift, fighting with her husband over a daughter neither of them know how to take care of. She's stuck in the lyrics, stuck in her dad's car, learning what she sees and hears.
