I thought you put me in rapture
I never asked you to dump her
Thought you knew we'd have a high life

And still I see
Your philosophy
Falling through my tainted mind
Would you dig my dirt?
Cos I'm so desperate
Can't you see you're wasting time?
I failed to tell you, to tell you now

That I've been fooled
Cos I'm not cool
And the scissors slide
Away with my pride

Speeding down a dead-end track
I wanted you there's no way back
Got a destructive appetite

Oh baby please
Lift me off my knees
A little smile can go for miles
I may be young
But I will grow up strong
And by then she'll look like her mum

Just to be absolutely sure of the facts
I'm happy to act just as a side salad
Happy to act
Happy to pay
Happy to wait
Baby youre great
When your oven goes 'ping'
I'll be there on your plate
When her oven goes bang...

    Song Meaning

I think this song is about a girl who is with a man who already is in a relationship. He dumped his girlfriend because he fell in love with the other girl or maybe just thought that the other girl expects him to decide between them or something.

However, the singer never wanted this; she thinks that things were better before he left the other girl for her: "I never asked you to dump her Thought you knew we'd have a high life” Instead of putting her in rapture the man just messed up, now things are too serious. She really wanted him before ("destructive appetite", she took another girls boyfriend), but she did not want to be his number one, she was happy as a "side salad" and did not want to be the main course.

Maybe the singer is much younger than the other woman is, because she says, "I may be young But I will grow up strong And by then she'll look like her mum" Eventually the man feels remorse and always tells her, she is too young for him and so she tells him that maybe she is young but the other girls will be old and not that pretty in a few years. At least if her mom does not look like Megan Fox, I think.

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
