Calm Like You Lyrics

I can still remember
When your city smelt exciting
I still get a whiff
Of that aroma now and then
Burglary and fireworks
The skies they were alighting
Accidents and toffee drops and thinking on the train

[Chorus]
Oh, he was young, in the frost
No regard for the cost
Of saying his feelings
In the moments they were felt
And if he was calm like you
Locked up inside of your loops
And he'd know full well
That all he had to say was
All he had to say was goodbye

Summertime made promises
It knew it couldn't keep
The fairytale was climbing up
A mountain far too steep
Colour in the pictures
With your royal hands
Now I am craving heartbreak
While you're making your demands

[Chorus]

And if he was calm like you
Locked up inside of your loops
And he'd know full well
That all he had to say was
All he had to say was goodbye

one of my favourites on the album. i dno what it means but i kind of have the idea that it's to do with a relationship falling apart. the guy loved her once and told her his feelings openly. i think he may have even used his words to convince her to start something with him, but now she's becoming to controlling and he wants out. but he feels guilty about leaving her.

i agree with some parts..yes opened up to the girl, but i dont think he loved her, because he's clearly over her in this song 'i can still remember when your city smelt exciting' ..as in he doesnt see it now! but at that time he made mistakes that allowed her to control him.. then 'if he was calm like you' is basically saying that if he'd been rational about it while 'locked up inside of your loops' he would have known that she'll do him no good,he would have 'said goodbye'.. 'promises it knew it couldn't keep' is just about having really high expectations from this girl, while at heart knowing that the mountain was far too steep.... is what i think.

i agree with heyna85 about a relationship promising more than it could give, but i would just like to add that he brakes up in a unnecessarily hard way, 'all he had to say was goodbye' but instead he told her exactly what he felt 'no regard for the cost of saying his feelings in moments they were felt' hurting her more than neccessary and he realises afterwards he was too hard on her.

I think it's about an inexperienced bloke who over romanticises things and had 'no regard for the cost of saying his feelings' because he just says what he feels rather than holding back. This puts the girl off and makes the relationship lose its flair fast. Because of this, the 'promises' they made each other in the summer were lost because the flair was gone. The girl on the other hand, is used to this kinda thing and was just calm about it, she made the promises and didn't say how she felt because she knew how it goes (she's 'locked up inside of' her loops) and the same happens to her every summer. The promises were simply a 'fairytale climbing up' too steep - it was never going to happen no matter how much he wanted it to. If he was as experienced as the girl, he would've known 'all he had to say was goodbye' because there was no chance they were going to see each other again. Although it was the 'same old' for her, she really hurt him, he felt the 'heartbreak'. Another song about long distance relationships in my opinion...

This is my favourite song on the album! I like the spy/James Bond style of it.

so many of these songs just remind me of one of the two having a lot of trouble keeping up a relationship when they have to say goodbye constantly

I think it's about thinking your relationship is perfect when it is actually really flawed

this might be a stupid question, but how many people is he singing about? himself, the girl, and another guy? or just himself and the girl? Because in the first verse he says 'i can still remember when your city smelt exciting' - and then goes on to say 'he was young', so is that someone else? and then how does 'i am craving heartbreak while you're making your demands' fit in? amazing song though.

I think it is, like many of you have said, about someone who falls deeply in love when he is young, so he absorbs all the smells and sounds of everything around him and feels things deeply and isn't afraid of the consequences of speaking his feelings even though it eventually harms him. It feels as though that raw and open emotion is both admired and longed for even though it can be destructive. It's hard to see if Alex is yearning for that youthfully honest emotion or sanctioning against it.

I think it's mainly just describing that period when a relationship has turned stale and it's broken down to just arguments with disdain growing for each other daily: "I am craving heartbreak whilst you're making your demands," being the giveaway that unlike in Mardy Bum, Turner doesn't care anymore.
