27th Ave. Shuffle Lyrics
Things are so much harder now
no matter how i try
Junkyard days and toxic waste
still love is on my mind
I can see the ledge now
Golden Gate is falling from behind
(?)
well if you call this living,
I just wanna hang my head and cry
Voices in my head
telling me that I am lost
Pills and alcohol
are making me a lost cause
I can see the ledge now
Golden Gate is falling from behind
(?)
Well if you call this living,
I just wanna hang my head and cry
no matter how i try
Junkyard days and toxic waste
still love is on my mind
Golden Gate is falling from behind
(?)
well if you call this living,
I just wanna hang my head and cry
telling me that I am lost
Pills and alcohol
are making me a lost cause
Golden Gate is falling from behind
(?)
Well if you call this living,
I just wanna hang my head and cry

I think this is about committing suicide in San Francisco. The first verse is fairly depressed and hopeless (Things are so much harder now/no matter how i try): life sucks and i can't fight it. Then the persona (the character singing--as opposed to the actual singer performing) mentions what sucks (Junkyard days, toxic waste, unrequited love). The second verse further describes the persona's feelings of despair and powerlessness> "Voices in my head are telling me that I am lost/ Pills and alcohol are making me a lost cause." The chorus, however, is the real clue. "I can see the ledge now/Golden Gate is falling from behind/(?)/." The persona sees the ledge of the Golden Gate bridge and jumps off--which is why it is "falling from behind"--and says that this kind of life is pathetic and not worth suffering through ("Well if you call this living,/I just wanna hang my head and cry.").
Damn, no comments, no help. To anyone reading this - is the "I just wanna hang my head and cry" anything to do with Johnny Cash?
Anyway. Awesome song. Awesome album.
Throughout this album, there are MANY references to other songs from the ear in which this album is meant to sound from (60-70). I.E in "alligator" the lines "Ya alligator, ya space-invader" uses the same rhyme and almost the same words as David Bowies "Moonage Daydream" which go "I'm an alligator, I'm a mama-papa coming for you/ I'm the space invader, I'll be a rock 'n' rollin' bitch for you". So, it is not unlikely that this is a little reference to Cash. It's fun to try and pick out the refs in the other songs too, keep an eye...

the (?) is just 'falling from behind' in the background.
Easy-Lucky-Free, I don't think the "I just wanna hang my head and cry" line has anything to do with Johnny Cash. Because, if you look at the whole line ("Well if you call this living, I just wanna hang my head and cry") and then the line "Voices in my head are telling me that I am lost. Pills and alcohol are making me a lost cause," it seems like he's saying, if all there is to life is being drunk and high and stuff all the time, he just wants to cry bevcause that's a sad, crappy, pathetic life to live.
are u sure its "falling from behind" in the echo? coz it really really really sounds like "on my mind"... i dunno. it WOULD fit, coz it matches to "on my mind" earlier in the song. anyway, i dunno the meaning. just every lyrics site seems to say "falling from behind"....i just doesnt fit. psh.
It could easily be about how a guy's life is crashing down, due to an addiction to something. Billie Joe's voice is so different in this band, and I love it. The beats are also different too. Good job Green Day/Foxboro Hot Tubs. :D
