Fire Lances Of The Ancient Hyperzephyrians Lyrics

We've crossed the burning wasteland
Sought out forgotten tombs
Within this shattered planet
Beneath a broken moon
We live amongst the ruins
Where cities once did rise
From graves of fallen nations
Watch hollow eyes

In our time we have seen
Untold pain and suffering

Our legends tell of weapons
Wielded by kings of old
Crafted by evil wizards
Unholy to behold
We seek the fire lances
That slew the ancient race
The world where they were masters
Now lays in waste

In your time you will see
Endless death and misery
Invoke myth and prophecy
All you know shall cease to be

well first of all, to explain the title, hyperzephyrians is derived for a greek myth about the hypreboreans, which means those who live past the north wind, in this sense hyperzephyrians means those who live past the west wind, which in my opinion would be america, because the times that JD writes about are many years ago, ancient times, where all that was known to the majority was asia, and europe, making europe the west, and now making america past the west.

if you watch the video for this song it depicts a post apocalyptic scenario, like after a nuclear holocaust. this song is about those days.

also to me this song explains how people tend to make things mystical and magical when they are just simply normal things, like in the video how everyone finds the things left behind after the nuclear holocaust mystical and powerful, when to us now, they are merely everyday things. JD creates great imagery in the way he writes, kick ass fuckin band

I agree with your theory on the Hyperzephyrians being Americans. I would like to add that the "fire lances" here are pretty obviously missiles, probably nuclear. To an ancient with no idea about modern warfare, a missile in the air might seem to him like a spear of fire. Besides, there's an ancient Chinese weapon known as the "fire lance" that was basically a gunpowder-propelled spear.

The Sword is so bad-ass.

Also how he says "kings of old" and "evil wizards" because the idea of republics or science is incomprehensible to them, so they have fit it to their way of life.

Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

to me it's pretty much talking about a post-apocalyptic future in which the new race inhabiting the Earth is searching for the nuclear weapons/missles. and the "kings of old" would be today's world leaders who potentially have nuclear weapons and the "evil wizards" are the scientists who invented and made/makes these nuclear weapons. the fact that their looking for them is all throughout the song "we've crossed the burning wastelands, sought out forgotten tombs... we seek the fire lances that slew the ancient race, the world where they were masters now lays in waste." we are the ancient race and in the future the song is describing our world lays in waste because of the nuclear weapons...
