the obvious meanin seems to be tht an incident occured & since he's been even more protective of this person he obviously cares for alot.
it also reveals the slight insecurity that he knows he has, he worries alot, overprotective ("clingy" to some) but he's sayin he's not ashamed of caring THAT much and hopes that the girl knows he not wanting to be a "ball and chain" holding her back, its just the way he is, he is slightly scared of changed and worries about things he's not familiar with. i LOVE the lines "If you think I want to hold you back, you should know me better than that"
it really is about understandin and knowing this person in order to understand that is intentions are good, he just really cares for the other person.
