This is in opposition to materialism, the foundation for science, as the basis of personal, existential philosophies. This is a cry toward "higher" ideals that include spirituality, etc., things that have been difficult to understand completely through science but which we are coming toward very quickly. Science is beginning to explain all psychological phenomena, even those that may seem subjectively ineffable. This is reminescent of modern literature, a sort of sorrow and nostalgia for a time when morality was based on religious, unshakable foundations. We no longer have that, and the author is lashing out on this situation by living in bad faith. He is embracing an illusion to move forward meaningfully. We must lie to ourselves to survive in this world.
