Monkey In Your Soul Lyrics
I got one and you want four
It's so hard to help you
I can't keep up with you no more
And you treat me like it's a sin
But you can't lock me in
You want me here with you right to the end
No thank you my friend
I fear the monkey in your soul
Won't you turn that bebop down
I can't hear my heart beat
Where's that fatback chord I found ?
Honey don't you think it was wrong
To interrupt my song ?
I'll pack my things and run so far from here
Goodbye dear
I fear the monkey in your soul
It's so hard to help you
I can't keep up with you no more
And you treat me like it's a sin
But you can't lock me in
You want me here with you right to the end
No thank you my friend
I can't hear my heart beat
Where's that fatback chord I found ?
Honey don't you think it was wrong
To interrupt my song ?
I'll pack my things and run so far from here
Goodbye dear

This is sung from the point of view of a guy who's girlfriend (or best friend, maybe) is under the control of a chemical addiction. In Alcoholics Anonymous, alcoholism is referred to as a "Monkey on your back", because it's a big, ugly, heavy, and sometimes obvious problem that you have to carry around with you no matter where you go. In this case, the "Monkey" has such a tight grasp on the person that he feels that it is in her soul.
I know what this song is about but i wonder if [maybe too early in time] but the person has a drug habit. They refer to monkey on your back to a drug habit I think heroin. Tis term is rarely used in alcohol addiction. He fears the money and doesn't want to get that habit so hes bookin! I can tell that Walter's addiction to heroin and other things but mostly smack, was bad and deep and he knows alot about the street lingo ,so he was there. So much reference that it takes one to know one, but Walter says it brilliantly and forget about Mr. Becker. Walter was genius in no uncertain terms. The best reference which is not so obvious like Time Out was Walter's Medical Science. What a song it is!! I have been listening to both Walter since inception which is about 50 years. I am devastated to put it mildly of Walter's Death. I love Donald to death but as song writers they are both very different.Walter is my favorite as a solo artist ,but again they are the best songwriter and players in my world bar none except Pul and John- the beatles of course.
@mrsadowsky AA is used by addicts of all types, and alcoholism is definitely an addiction. Many alcoholics like to think it's not the same thing, but it's exactly the same. I myself have always associated the expression "monkey on your back" with coke addiction. Not sure why.

After looking into it, the expression seems to have origins going back to the early 19th century, so I'm guessing it comes from mixing folklore describing monkeys as evil with the albatross from 1834's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner". That's actually a good half century before the invention of...

That's actually a good half century before the invention of heroin. Opium was pretty big then, but most opium addicts were also alcoholics. There was no AA, and no effective treatment.
