A kiss could've killed me
If it were not for the rain
A kiss could've killed me
Baby if it were not for the rain

And I had a feeling it was coming on
And I felt it coming
For so long
If I'm to be the fool
Then so it be

This fool can die now
With a heart that's soaked
How
How had it coming
For so long

And darling take my hand
And lead me through the door
Let's kidnap each other
And start singing our song

My heart is charged now
Oh, it's dancing in my chest
And I fly when I walk now
From the spell in that kiss

Cause I ...

It could've
It could've killed me
It could've killed me
If it were not for the rain

Oh darling let me dream
Cause somewhere inside me
I have been waiting
So patiently
For you

So don't you break
Don't break my dream
Don't break my dream

Let the rain exalt us
As the night draws in
Winds howl around us
As we begin
What a way to start a fire
Broken with the break of day

A kiss could have killed me
If it were not for rain

And I have a feeling it's coming on
And I felt it coming on
for so long

And oh it could've
It could've killed me
It could've killed me
If it were not for the rain

    My Interpretation

This song holds a very different meaning to me. I believe this song is about a toxic relationship that almost destroyed them. They refer to the relationship as a kiss and they refer to the break up as the rain. I believe the guy broke up with her as she begins by saying she had a feeling it (the breakup) was coming and that she was a fool (maybe for believing things could work?). Then she says her heart is soaked implying the rain (breakup) has saturated her heart and she welcomes death. The song then goes back to the beginning of their relationship when they first fell for each other up until the point where they both say "don't break my dream". After that lyric the music changes showing a fast forward in time. Then they say "let the rain (breakup) exalt us" meaning they want to be dignified again now that they have gotten rid of the tocicity that has been surrounding them. "What a way to start a fire broken with the break of day" is self explanatory. They had a burning fire for a fleeting moment but as the sun rose it vanished. Then they say again that "A kiss kiss could've killed me if it were not for rain" signifying the rain put out the fire and the love they once felt became nothing more than wet ashes. They finish by saying that they both "felt it (the rain) coming on". I could be completely wrong but that's what this song means to me. Either way it is a beautiful song and one of my favorites.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
