Punky Reggae Party Lyrics
Oooh yeah, yeah
Said you gonna punky, punky, punk
New wave, new phrase
New wave, new craze
Going to a party
And I hope you are hearty
So please don't be naughty
For it's a punky reggae party
New wave, new craze
New wave, new phrase
It takes a joyful sound
To make the world go 'round
Come with your heart and soul
Oh c'mon, c'mon rock your bone
It's a punky reggae party
And it's tonight
It's a punky reggae party
And it's alright
What did you say?
Rejected by society
Mistreated with impunity
Protected by my dignity
I search for reality
New wave, new craze
New wave, new wave, new phrase
I'm saying the Wailers will be there
The Damned, The Jam, The Clash
Maytals will be there
Dr. Feelgood too, oooh
No boring old farts
No boring old farts
No boring old farts
Will be there, singing
No boring old farts
No boring old farts
No boring old farts
Will be there
Well it's a punky reggae party
And it's tonight
It's a punky reggae party
And it's alright
Whoa ahhh
A tip from a gypsy
She said, "Man, you gettin' tipsy,
Hidin' from reality,
In your world of hypocrisy,
In your world of hypocrisy,
In your world of hypocrisy,
In your world of hypocrisy,
In your world of hypocrisy,
Look out!"
A bubble, we a bubble
We ain't looking for no trouble
But if you trouble trouble
We'll give it to you double
Let me tell ya
It takes a joyful sound
To make the world go 'round
It takes a joyful sound
So c'mon, c'mon rock your bone
'Cause it's a punky reggae party
And it's tonight
Well it's a punky reggae party
And it's alright
Whoa ahhh
A tip from a gypsy
She said, "Man, you gettin' tipsy,
Hidin' from reality,
In your world of hypocrisy,
In your world of hypocrisy."
Said, "You're hidin' from reality,
In your world of hypocrisy,
In your world of hypocrisy."
Let me say that
A bubble, a bubble, a bubble, a bubble
A bubble, a bubble, a bubble, a bubble
A bubble, a bubble
We ain't looking for no trouble
New wave, new phrase
New wave, new craze

Yeah, the song's about a party, but not just any old party. Marley is celebrating the solidarity between Jamaica's dub and reggae scene with the UK punk and new wave scene of the late 70s. They didn't have to be related by sound just to share a worldview, but sometimes they did anyway. Check out a group like The Slits, or The Clash's cover of Junior Murvin's "Police and Thieves".
Basically, he's saying that since we're all on the same page, why not dance the night away together?
"Rejected by society Mistreated with impunity Protected by my dignity I search for reality"
To me, any one of the punk outfits of the time could have said something like that. You don't have to be black to know (and be appalled) that anyone can be treated like niggers.
When THe Clash covered 'Police and Thieves' Bob Marley enjoyed it so much he wrote a song including the UK Punk scene 'THe Damned, The Jam, The Clash'...
exactly. Junior Marvin was upset with the punk cover. Bob's calling him a boring old fart.

This song is about the marriage of Punk Rock and Reggae in London around 77-78 After the Assasination attempt on Bobs life, Bob went into exile in London and recorded "The Album Of The Century" EXODUS. During his stay in London Bob was introduced to the Thriving Punk Rock scene and good friend of Bob, Viv Goldman introduced Bob to The Clash's cover of Junior Murvins "Police and Thieves" and the Clash's song "White Man In Hammersmith Palais" Bob grew found of a couple of Punk groups including the Clash (Of course) The Slits, The Damned Hence the line
"I'm saying the Wailers will be there The Damned, The Jam, The Clash Maytals will be there Dr. Feelgood too,"
Bob realised that Punks and Rasta's where not that different they were both fighting for a similar cause with a similar state of mind.
