Many Shades of Black Lyrics

Go ahead, go ahead, go ahead
And smash it on the floor
Take whatever's left
And take it with you out the door...

See if I cry,
see if I shed a single sorry tear
I can't say that it's been that great
No, in fact it's been a wasted worried year

Everybody sees
And everyone agrees
That you and I are wrong
And it's been that way too long

Take it as it comes
and be thankful when it's done
There's so many ways to act
and there's many shades of black
There's so many shades of black
There's so many shades of black

Let it out (let it all out) let it all out
Say what's on your mind
You can kick and scream
and shout and say things
That are so unkind.

Yeah,
See if I care
And see if I stand firm or if I fall
Cause in the back of my mind,
and on the tip of my tongue
is the answer to it all...

And everybody sees
And everyone agrees
That you and I are wrong
And it's been that way too long

Take it as it comes
and be thankful when it's done
There's so many ways to act
and there's many shades of black,
There's so many shades of black,
Yeah, there's many shades of black

Yeah...
Everybody sees
And everyone agrees
That you and I are wrong
And it's been that way too long

So take it as it comes
and be thankful when it's done
There's so many ways to act
and you cannot take it back
no you cannot take it back
there's so many shades of black,
There's so many shades of black,
Yeah, there's many shades of black
there's so many shades of black
there's so many shades of black
Yeah, there's many shades of black
there's so many shades of black
Yeah, there's many shades of black
there's so many shades of black

oh yeah.

Anyone understand the last line in the second stanza? It sounded like wasted free (either literally wasting an otherwise free year or "wasted-free" as in drunkless) to me but I doubt it's right.

This song is clearly about a break-up. The guy thinks it is enough and does not regret breaking up.

Guy? I thought it was sung by Adele? That's the one I have, anyway.

am I the only one who always understands "a wasted WHOLE year"? kinda makes sense, doesn't it?

amazing song ....you know, i think 'many shades of black' could mean that are many things are so wrong in this paticular relationship, but they wanted to stick with it despite the bad stuff. Everyone seems see the how wrong things are but they didn't at first, and i guess they have move one now..

I always heard wasted leap year, i think he was just trying to be clever, and in a way make it seem like even longer than a usual year. But yeah, I heard leap year from day one, and am listening now and still did haha, could be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time

okay so it's about a breakup, but what do the central lines mean then?

There's so many ways to act and there's many shades of black

This seems to be the main part of the song but I don't see what it means. IdeaS?

maybe when it says "Everybody sees And everyone agrees That you and I are wrong And it's been that way too long" they're talking about everybody saying that the singer and his significant other shouldn't be together so they're just deciding to take what people are saying to heart and break up. it would fit with the rest of the whole 'break-up' theory about the rest of the lyrics.

When it says "there's many shades of black," it could be a reference to what Henry Ford said about his cars in the early 1900s:"you can have any color as long as its black"[i'm paraphrasing]

it could be like, he's only had one choice [his current girlfriend/lover] this whole year and he can do whatever he wants as long as it has to do with her, like he's trapped.
