I was following the, I was following the
I was following the, I was following the
I was following the, I was following the
I was following the, I was following the

I was following the pack, all swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red tied 'round their throats
To keep their little heads from falling in the snow
And I turned 'round and there you go
And Michael, you would fall and turn the white snow red
As strawberries in the summertime

I was following the pack, all swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red tied 'round their throats
To keep their little heads from falling in the snow
And I turned 'round and there you go
And Michael, you would fall and turn the white snow red
As strawberries in the summertime

I was following the pack, all swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red tied 'round their throats
To keep their little heads from falling in the snow
And I turned 'round and there you go
And Michael, you would fall and turn the white snow red
As strawberries in summertime

    My Interpretation

I was following the... What do soldiers do? They follow. Who do they follow? The singer doesn't know until he sees the Pack, a troop of soldiers.

all swallowed in their coats With scarves of red tied 'round their throats Uniforms. Why does that keep their "little heads" (not so smart, going off to war because it's what the Pack does) from falling in the snow? Not sure, and it may just be a convenient rhyme.

So poor Michael gets shot, "there you go". Michael's blood turns the white snow red. This line always makes me think of Napoleon's invasion of Russia, with all that snow, and all that blood.
