Surprise Lyrics
It's cool being the only one, but it's lonely
I could have fallen in love
A thousand times before if only someone had known me
They say there's someone for everyone
Oh but the work will be never done
When all you need is to be meet half way but nobody tries
Don't be surprised
Don't be surprised
Don't be surprised
There are hills and mountains between us
Always something to get over
Needless to say it's a wonderful day
I just noticed how nice it was to know ya
Oh, but be ready to sacrifice
If you love him you should tell him twice
Because when everything that's alive
Ultimately dies oh, Lord
Don't be surprised
Don't be surprised
Don't be surprised
Somebody's watchin' maybe you want 'em to see you
But with your regrets and secrets
You don't really want them to be you
Well you can make believe I'm blind
And for now I'll be just fine
But when the child grows up to have more than just your eyes
Don't be surprised
Don't be surprised
Don't be surprised
Now the ending to every story is most enchanting
Now whether it's heaven or hell I wear it well
Please forgive me for rambling I just wanted ya'll
To know that I don't know it all
So when that big o'l smile ends up being just a disguise
Don't be surprised
Don't be surprised
Oh, Lord
Don't be surprised
Oh, oh, Lord
Don't be surprised
I said don't be
Don't be surprised
There's nothing left in here
That's surprising baby prising baby
I could have fallen in love

yeah, its abt ppl being only human, and that everything ultimatley has one end, u can only do a show for so long, then it must end, and dont be surprised
I really don't think that's what the song is about. Its about not expecting life to always be the same. About how you have to make your own life.
The first verse is saying how if you're always introverted, you can't expect the love of your life to just come find you.
The second is saying when you're in relationships, you can't expect the people in those relationships to always be there, so you have to work to make it as good as you can, tell people you love them, etc. Don't be surprised when they're no longer there to tell.
The third is saying when you have kids, you can't hide your problems and trials from them. If you hide it all away, don't be surprised when they grow up to be just as ugly on the inside as you.
The last verse is about Cee-Lo himself. He's saying how no matter what he's going through, he always looks the same, but he's admitting to not always being so wise. So don't be surprised if one day we find out his "big ol' smile" is hiding something darker.
I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THIS SONG IS ABOUT BECAUSE I JUST EXPERIENCED THE MEANING OF THIS SONG FOR MYSELF...THIS SONG IS ABOUT SOMEONE WHO HAS RECIEVED THEIR THIRD EYE AND WALKS A LONELY PATH, AND CANT FIND PEOPLE TO LOVE OR RELATE TO THEM BECAUSE EVERYONE IN THE WORLD IS TOO BUSY BEING BLINDED BY IGNORANCE...
THIS PERSON HAS RECEIVED LIFE CHANGING KNOWLEDGE BUT REGRETS IT BECAUSE THEY CANT GO BACK TO THEIR LIFE OF BEING BLIND...THATS WHY CEELO IS SAYING DONT BE SURPRISED..BECAUSE THEIR ARE BURDENS AND LONELINESS IN WALKING A RIGHTEOUS PATH OF KNOWLEDGE. SO THEREFORE THIS PARTICULAR PERSON SHOULDNT BE SURPRISED IF THEY HAVE NO ONE TO RELATE TO THEM, OR LOVE THEM, OR THE PERSON SHOULD NOT BE SURPRISED TO GIVE BIRTH TO A CHILD THAT HOLDS THEIR EMOTIONAL SCARS, PAIN ETC.
CEELO SAYS "Well you can make believe I'm blind. And from now I'll be just fine."
MEANING IF HE CAN UN-KNOW HIS KNOWLEDGE AND GET RID OF HIS THIRD EYE (WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE), HE WOULDNT BE LONELY...HE WOULD BE HAPPY IN HIS IGNORANCE AND BLINDNESS LIKE THE REST OF THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE HE IS SURROUNDED BY...
SO HE IS SAYING DONT BE SURPRISED THAT YOU ARE LONELY ONCE YOU WAKE UP FROM SOCIETYS BRAINWASHING TECHNICS AND RECIEVE YOUR THIRD EYE.
THATS THE BEST WAY I CAN EXPLAIN IT....
Does anyone make out what it says right at the beginning of the song??
TarynB your onto something.
Fuckin love this song.
Society is being brainwashed. The majority of people just do what they do, think what they think, and they live in blissful ignorance. Those few people who search deep enough into the lies to seek truth, answers and understanding about what is really going on will soon know.
It is sometimes cool being the only one, but because everyone else is still so blind, it is so hard to relate to anyone - they just don't understand. This makes it hard to find love unless you "meet half way" - but its so often just not worth putting them through the pain:
"If you love 'em you should tell 'em twice. Because when everything that's alive ultimately dies, oh lord,"
If your going to meet someone half way, you're going to have to tell them what you know - which might not be easy news to hear. But don't be surprised at their reaction, and especially don't be surprised if you can't make them see through your eyes.
"Somebody's watching. Maybe you want 'em to see you. But with your regrets and secret you don't really want them to be you."
Someone has found interest in what you know, and you think you want them to see what you see, but because of all that is bad within you as a result of it, you don't really want them to go through with knowing what you know. So maybe its best just to pretend to be blind like everyone else and just pretend to be fine.
"Please forgive me for rambling. I just wanted y'all to know that I don't know at all. So when that big ol' smile ends up being just a disguise,"
I fuckin love this paragraph. He's apologising for 'rambling', and then goes and says that he actually doesn't know at all. The way I interpret it, is that he's telling us he doesn't know, when infact he does know, but he is realising that sometimes it is just better to put on a smile and pretend everything is ok because that way people can continue to live their 'happy', ignorant lives, and not be concerned by the truth.
He also says that when the child grows up to have more than just your eyes, don't be surprised. In other words, even if you pretend to be blind the truth is still going to be let out and there will be knowledge passed on.
Having knowledge isn't easy. But don't sacrifice it, what you do with it is crucial.
...or maybe this is all Just a Thought?

Their is no "on" or "off" comment about anyone's perception. An artists makes a song that means a specific thing to them, but when their fans hear thier music, it may speak to a person from a totally different angle.
I do agree with what forthlove said, but I think what forthlove said was just scartching the surface of the song.
It's different angles to look at this song.
The third eye theory I stated
or
the song could be about someone long to be close to another while trying to hide their inner demon from that person.
"Does anyone make out what it says right at the beginning of the song??" I think it is 'I am getting lost, On my way to find him' I think the song is about being special, but you are not always special for long and you shouldn't be 'surprised' when you are no longer special.
The song samples Building with A Steeple by The Eighth Day.

this is what i think.
"its cool being the only one but its lonely I could've fallen in love a thousand time before if only someone had known me. They say there's someone for everyone oh but the work will never be done. When all you need is to be met half way but nobody tries,"
this shows someone that has not known real love yet but blames it on other people not trying to really get to know him. he arrogantly thinks that if anyone tried to get to know him then they would fall in love with him. he gets by with this by believing that it shows independance and strength to go on without someone else but at the same time hates being lonely.

the hills and mountains part describes the difficulties of getting to know someone and letting them into your life. the wonderful day/nice to know ya part implies he started to make a connection with someone but moved on before getting to close, and then realized how nice it was to have that person even if it was just momentarily. the last part he says to tell em twice. i take that to mean that if you are with someone you need to constantly express your feeling to them because it will eventually end.
"Somebody's watching. Maybe you want 'em to see you. But with your regrets and secret you don't really want them to be you. Well you can make believe I'm blind. And from now I'll be just fine. But when the child grows up to have more than just your eyes,"
"somebodys watching, maybe you want em to see you" implies that maybe someone is interested in you and you are considering a relationship. the next line is your doubt and shame. you think that when two people are in a relationship they eventually mold a single identity and you dont want anyone else to share your load and baggage. he makes believe hes blind to ignore her and pretend he doesnt see the interest becuase of baggage. he promises himself he will be fine but know that someday he will have to unload everything that is weighing him down so that he can be happy or else he will just impart his bad feelings to others or his possible kids.
"Now the ending to every story is most enchanting. Now whether it's heaven or hell I wear it well. Please forgive me for rambling. I just wanted y'all to know that I don't know at all. So when that big ol' smile ends up being just a disguise,
Don't be surprised."
the first two lines are him saying that he has blind faith that everything will work out eventually, even if most would say that nothing has worked out well in the end he tells himself that it is ok. he takes heaven and hell the same. He admits he has no idea about the future or how his life will turn out but not to be surprised if everything fails and you were completely wrong about life. and then he apologizes for taking up your time becuase he knows that you really dont care about his problems.
alot of gnarls' songs can relate to loneliness, drugs, and depression and i definitely got that feel in this song. thats what i got from it and its probably not what very many others got but thats the beauty in music is that it hits everyone differently.

eh? sorry, but I thing the last two comments are about as far off as a conservative texan in a pride parade. though down the line forthelove seems to be on point. "you can make belive I'm blind and from now I'll be just fine" doen't seem to be an atempt at denial, but a condemnation of it, like "you can pretend I don't know what I'm talking about, but the consequences will hurt you, not me"
as far as the whole third eye thing, yeah, maybe I could see that working, but why would an enlightened individual need to be told not to be surprised? wouldn't the song be like preaching to the pews?
If what you guys are saying is true, and cee-lo is infact talking about how somone who can see though society and gets isolated because of it, i would be much dissappointed in him, especialy after his song transformer from his first album. True enlightenment comes means being able to work with and above the system, not outside of it.

"i've come to love the inevitable, and regaurdless of it's manifestation I'm going to be just fine, maybe what i'm saying makes no sence to you, but look. I don't have all the answers. i'm just saying, don't take anything at face value"
