I love this song. I love how mellow it is. I personally can really relate to it, I reminds me of a relationship I was in for quite a few years, it was constantly on & off, I couldn't stop going back to him so it's so good to hear a song with such honest lyrics

This song is beautiful...one of my favorites as well. I just love her voice. she is true talent =]
i think this song talks about how this guy uses a girl as sort of something to fall back on, or to get somewhere he wants to be... a "stepping stone" but the girl says she's "standing upright on my own" and she doesn't need to be treated like that.
i especially love the chorus of this song "but i will never be your stepping stone take it all or leave me alone i will never be your stepping stone i'm standing upright on my own."

It's actually about duffy having feelings for a guy and not having the nerve to tell him ... guy kinda knows and kinda teases her she said so in an interview, this and mercy are sort of autobiographical, this being about love she didnt admit and mercy about a purely sexual relationship

Like, she likes him, maybe is even in love with him secretly, and once he catches on, he just kinda plays along, teasing her just enough to stick around - but he dosnt really want her, it just makes him feel good to feel wanted. Meanwhile, its torturing her. So she's basically saying she's onto him and she's not going to be his stepping stone anymore. I'm living that right now, its nice to hear a song that lets me know I'm not the only one in that situation.

Menfor, You know, I knew I identified with it for a reason and I couldn't place it. The autobiographical parts, and out of context specifics are what kept me from getting it. Totally hooked on this song right now. Reminds me of being in similar situations... ~
I love this song so much I heard it properly forthe first time today and realised how much it sounds like what ive been through recently an ex always comes running back when he has no1 else, and foolishly i take him back because i love him but recently i realised that i refuse to let him walk all over me and that i want actual closure i can so see where shes coming from. its beautiful

for me, this song is about a girl in love with a guy who doesn't give her as much as she gives to him. in fact, he's not in love with her, he's rather using her in their relationship, has her as a crutch but now she realizes that this is not what she wants and tells him that she will no longer be his "stepping stone" so he'd better destroy her once and for all ("take it all") or just leave ("or leave me alone") because now she can live on her own ("I'm standing upright on my own").

I just heard this song through a commercial teaser for a TV show. Beautiful.
I think it describes unrequited love. The woman is in love with a man that she had a sexual relationship with but she stops herself from continuing it. 'Not being a stepping stone' doesn't really refer to him using her to get money or fame but rather him using her for sex then moving on to the next 'stone' or woman in line.
I'm so glad they are bringing back artists that actually have talent. Reminds me of the good stuff from the '60s :)
