Plastic Lyrics

I wonder why
I don't know what you see
Of course I care
I won't pretend

It's just a thought
I've said enough
Don't you know life turns me
Always wants me
I can hardly pray

I could try
But don't know what you hear
'Cause in my heart
You were so clear

It's just a thought
I've said enough
Don't you know life turns me
Always wants me
I can hardly pray

On your stage
A show that you create
All by yourself
I am nowhere

You never noticed
You were so sure
Don't you know life turns me
Always wants me
I can hardly pray

She feels like a Pinocchio in her relationship: a lifeless, plastic marionette on her lover's "stage". Just as Pinocchio prayed to be a real boy, she wants to be treated with equality and respect.

Unfortunately, their relationship is pretty dire. There appears to be no empathy or communication ("I don't know what you see", "Don't know what you hear", "All by yourself", "I am nowhere", "You never noticed").

All she can do is affirm that she is alive, a person with thoughts and feelings, flesh and blood: "Don't you know life turns me, always wants me?"

I agree with Anarchitect about the basic feeling of manipulation being reflected by the marionette imagery. I feel that it is expounded upon by the interplay between brief, repudiated attempts to address these feelings and abrupt internal reactions to the dismissal. One can feel the dialogue turning inwards with the "Don't you know life turns me...." bit, expressing a brooding resentment for the denial of self, as if the person knows this simply can't go on, but is helpless and without recourse.

I agree with both of the others... it reminds me perfectly of a frustrating experience I had dating a guy with Aspergers Syndrome, no empathy and it was like I didnt exist emotionally to him... and the rage and sadness of how it feels can be translated from the tone of the song...

Ask him and he would tell you he was there for me... thus plastic... a fake front..
