Your Belly In My Arms Lyrics
We'd watch the shapes the rain would make
Falling down the window of our bus
I said they reminded me of paper ponies blowing free
You said they reminded you of us
Your belly in my arms
Tomorrow we'll be through these rains and gone
Woke up with the driver crying Birmingham
Looked through the glass and found the morning sky
I said that cloud's shaped like a burning man
You didn't have the heart to tell me why
Your belly in my arms
Tomorrow we'll be through these clouds and gone
I put my hand inside your skirt
And asked if you thought that our babies life would turn out this way
You said you wasn't really sure
But really you was too good to say it
Your belly in my arms
Tomorrow we'll be through these rains and gone
Your belly in my arms
Tomorrow we'll be through these gates and gone
Falling down the window of our bus
I said they reminded me of paper ponies blowing free
You said they reminded you of us
Tomorrow we'll be through these rains and gone
Looked through the glass and found the morning sky
I said that cloud's shaped like a burning man
You didn't have the heart to tell me why
Tomorrow we'll be through these clouds and gone
And asked if you thought that our babies life would turn out this way
You said you wasn't really sure
But really you was too good to say it
Tomorrow we'll be through these rains and gone
Your belly in my arms
Tomorrow we'll be through these gates and gone

I'm pretty sure this song is about a man and his pregnant wife/girlfriend on a bus traveling somewhere. I always figured they were moving somewhere for the child - trying to start a new life. Mmm, I love the Felice Brothers.
Im pretty sure thats right as well. Great song
I think it's about a pregnant couple that have fallen on hard times. Maybe they're running cause he's in trouble, or that he lost his job or something.
It's about Simone Felice's girlfriend who had a miscarriage. Great song
this was written couple years before she suffered the miscarraige..... which I find chilling
a pregnant couple heading for greener pastures although are really quite pesimistic. that's what I get out of the song. In the context of the album it makes me think that they may be on the run from the law though.
I suspect the Birmingham reference is about the abortion clinic bombings from the late 90's. I was in medical school at the time and remember it clearly. This song always gives me chills. Wish there was a chance for a reunion of Simone and James/Ian.
The song always strikes me as being a reference to Townes' "Snowin on Raton" which says: "Come mornin I'll be through them hills and gone".

The way I read it was that he is planning to bring the kid up with her in Birmingham. She is planning an abortion.
