We Carry On Lyrics
The taste of life I can't describe
It's choking on my mind
Reaching out I can't believe
Faith it can't decide
On and on I carry on
But underneath my mind
And on and on I tell myself
It's this I can't disguise
Oh can't you see
Holding on to my heart
I bleed the taste of life
The pace, the time, I can't survive
It's grinding down the view
Breaking out which way to choose
A choice I can't renew
Holding on I carry on
But underneath my mind
And on and on I tell myself
It's this I can't disguise
Oh can't you see
Holding on to my heart
I bleed, no place is safe
Can't you see the taste of life
It's choking on my mind
Reaching out I can't believe
Faith it can't decide
But underneath my mind
And on and on I tell myself
It's this I can't disguise
Holding on to my heart
I bleed the taste of life
It's grinding down the view
Breaking out which way to choose
A choice I can't renew
But underneath my mind
And on and on I tell myself
It's this I can't disguise
Holding on to my heart
I bleed, no place is safe
Can't you see the taste of life

This song was originally called "Peaches", which makes sense, I think. The fruits represent the vital and sensuous "taste of life" that makes a mockery of the daily grind through which we force ourselves to carry on. (e.g. the grind of life in general, or maybe the going-through-the-motions of a romance gone stale and inert.)
In any case, the cost of carrying on may well be self-deception; the heart knows the truth, and bleeds because of it.
If anything, some people have noticed that this song seems to be Portishead's homage to the band Silver Apples.
Check out their song "Oscillations". It's the first one in a mix found here:

Class.
I thought it being called Peaches was a tongue in cheek reference to the electronic band because of the song's feel, but that would work.
I really like this song and this whole album. pretty damn good.
Holy. The resemblance to Oscillations is uncanny! Thanks for sharing. I remember when their self-titled album came out (I was 13!) - Now I'm as excited for the new album! This song I think is basically about bad choices in life and letting go of them. Not torturing yourself with bad choices/experiences. Very self-explanatory by the title. Great song!
Life and the choices we make. Are you gonna stay stuck where you are and forever regret or are you gonna shake things up and do what keeps you alive.
Also, Relationships come to mind. "Oh can't you see Holding on to my heart I bleed the taste of life" She only feels alive with this person...perhaps the choice is to stay where she is numb or go to the person who makes her feel alive.
