No Place at All Lyrics
No place at all to call my own
Still wandering the world
And friends of mine are moving on
Getting comfortable cars
Getting married
In someone elses neighbourhood
I hear a telephone
Who lives in those well-lighted homes
With their windows aglow
In the evening?
Look at me
Crying in my sleep
No one has to rescue me
I'm no place at all
The sun goes down beyond the trees
No sound, no trace of wind
The world is calm and beautiful
But it's breaking my heart completely
Look at me
Crying in my sleep
No one has to rescue me
It's plain to see
I'm no place at all
I'm no place at all
Look at me
Crying in my sleep
No one has to rescue me
It's plain to see
Could it be
I'm following this reverie
To nowhere and nobody
To no place at all
To no place at all
Still wandering the world
And friends of mine are moving on
Getting comfortable cars
Getting married
I hear a telephone
Who lives in those well-lighted homes
With their windows aglow
In the evening?
Crying in my sleep
No one has to rescue me
I'm no place at all
No sound, no trace of wind
The world is calm and beautiful
But it's breaking my heart completely
Crying in my sleep
No one has to rescue me
It's plain to see
I'm no place at all
Crying in my sleep
No one has to rescue me
It's plain to see
I'm following this reverie
To nowhere and nobody
To no place at all
To no place at all

A ridiculously beautiful and heartbreaking song.
“This is also from the exile front, about being out of my element and doubting, s most artists do, taking the path less traveled by. I really fell in love with the 6/8 [a slow waltz tempo] on this record. It seems to serve the song rather than dictate the song.”
I think this song is about someone who doesn't have a relationship and sees all her/his friends and all the people around her getting married and having good lives and having great relationships. She puts a brave front on (ex. "no one has to rescue me") and pretends like it doesn't bother her but secretly she wants exactly what they want (ex. "Look at me, Crying in my sleep"). If that's what the song is about well, then I can identify with that secret yearning for a relationship.
