Punch Drunk Grinning Soul Lyrics
It took me everything I had
To give all that I could
Walk beside me while I sleep
Steer me from the slumber wolf
Tangled forest of the mind
Speaks to me of self-despise
Close the window through the pane
Hear the siren's serenade
Could have been the comeback kid
The southpaws' legend glove to fill
No shadow boxer but the one
A true contender for the crown
Now this punch drunk grinning soul
In its' corner begs 'no more'
Chorus
Hey now, stay proud
You were lost on a blue day
Hey now, stay proud
Hey now, stay proud
you were lost on a blue day
Hey now, stay proud
But we hardly knew ya
The chamber echo never speaks
The rushin' tide devours my feet
No global warming fills this soul
For hell it freezes what it stole
From the beggar's empty plate
To our world that stuffs its' face
Chorus
But these tired eyes are crashin' down on me
While the paint never dries
On these four walls that now suffocate me
But tonight, maybe tonight
All will be free
Release, unlock this prison door
It can't hold me anymore
Serpent lied with sting of tale
Hand of reason rusts the nail
Now this punch drunk grinning soul
In its' corner begs 'no more'
chorus
To give all that I could
Walk beside me while I sleep
Steer me from the slumber wolf
Tangled forest of the mind
Speaks to me of self-despise
Close the window through the pane
Hear the siren's serenade
The southpaws' legend glove to fill
No shadow boxer but the one
A true contender for the crown
Now this punch drunk grinning soul
In its' corner begs 'no more'
Hey now, stay proud
You were lost on a blue day
Hey now, stay proud
Hey now, stay proud

The rushin' tide devours my feet
No global warming fills this soul

I'm truly shocked that no one has commented on this magnificent song yet.
It manages to capture a feeling of despairing darkness, and is rather beautiful, although in my opinion the chorus probably could've been better.
As for the meaning.. well I haven't but the vaguest clue. It obviously speaks of world troubles, and perhaps it's about struggling to see what the human race does, and resisting the urge to hate and despise it.
I think it's about an otherwise proud, strong person who has gone through some sort of pain and suffering, whether that's physical, spiritual, or emotional. He fought hard, but he lost the fight, and life almost delivered a knockout blow. The song encourages him to stay proud and grin through it all, as hard as that may be.
I think it talks about a hard worker, someone who's trying to be the best but he fails. He gives up and doesn't want to go on but someone tells him he must (Hey now, stay proud). I'm not 100% sure though.
If you watch the video it makes a lot more sense. Its about people (mostly veterans) coming back from war with physical and mental scars, then being shunned by society. His father in law was one of those people, who finally got help in his 80's. It's not Irish, its pretty plain english.
The song is supposedly meant as a biographical account of a young man who unexpectedly decides on committing suicide. The music video was changed from that theme to one more dramatic and meaningful, that being those suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, it having to do with a rabbit having been attacked by a wolf and returning to it's family traumatized and lashing out at it's fellows in much the same way many soldiers are seen to.
This song is about a guy the band knew who passed on before his time. Not too sure about the exact circumstances, but this meaning is straight from the mouth of Dave King at a concert in Tulsa, OK
I actually like the chorus being so simple. I really wish I "spoke some Irish" because then I could tell exactly what he is saying, and know when it's just words that fit or some sort of saying? Yeah. Too bad I was born in the U.S. instead. Did I mention I hate it hear? Anyway. Well, I love this song.
Here* Oh my god. I hate using the wrong word. Sorry folks.
