The Lightning Storm Lyrics
This lonely existence paves the way
For the heart of hearts must beat be brave
While this quiet lightning storm
Wrecks the harvest gold we try to sow
And so it begins
The way the blood still dances
Beneath the skin
As the messenger from hell says
'We're bound to win'
As the days they come, but the years they go
So take care of your freedom
They'll never know
I sit on the wing for a blackbird's song
To tell me where and when this all went wrong
There's no resolution without remorse
With ignorance bliss defend
'Let's stay the course'
Puncture the skin
And see its' blood run cold
On desert sand
Come hear the men from mothers
With childless hands
As the days they come, but the years they go
So take care of your freedom
They'll never know
Take good care of your freedom
They'll never know
Take what you give
Until there's nothing left
But forever live
And night descends on shadows without their kill
As the days they come, but the years they go
So take care of your freedom
They'll never know
Take good care of your freedom
They'll never know
As the days they come, but the years they go
So take care of your freedom
They'll never know
For the heart of hearts must beat be brave
While this quiet lightning storm
Wrecks the harvest gold we try to sow
The way the blood still dances
Beneath the skin
As the messenger from hell says
'We're bound to win'
As the days they come, but the years they go
So take care of your freedom
They'll never know
To tell me where and when this all went wrong
There's no resolution without remorse
With ignorance bliss defend
'Let's stay the course'
And see its' blood run cold
On desert sand
Come hear the men from mothers
With childless hands
As the days they come, but the years they go
So take care of your freedom
They'll never know
Take good care of your freedom
They'll never know
Until there's nothing left
But forever live
And night descends on shadows without their kill
As the days they come, but the years they go
So take care of your freedom
They'll never know
Take good care of your freedom
They'll never know
So take care of your freedom
They'll never know

This whole album is great, but this song definitely stands out. I can't believe nobody has commented on it yet.
This was, I think, the second song I heard from the new album. As soon as I heard it, I was like, "Yes! I love this song!" I think it's a pretty mournful song, regretting past mistakes and talking about how terrible things are now. =/
It's a song about being pissed off at what you've done but as time passes we'll get over it and everything will be ok.
hoss13 got it. Dave king said himself "this next song is about being pissed off, it's called the lightning storm. he said that 2/15 at the show
This is one of Flogging Molly's catchiest tunes. I can see how it's about being pissed off, "The way the blood still dances beneath the skin".. Interesting that the song has such an upbeat and optimistic sort of sound to it, yet it's about anger. Awesome song!
This song sounds like it's about isolation, and guilt. I sense an undertone of murder or war, mainly because Flogging Molly writes a lot about war.
This is almost definitely about the wars in the Middle East, and each verse represents an evolving view of the war as time progresses.
The first verse is America's initial reaction. 9/11 hurt us at our height, and got our blood boiling. We wanted to go take out the devil in the Middle east.
"and the years do go"
The second verse is a few years into the war when we realized we had entered into the Iraq War under false pretenses, and that it was going to be a lot longer and messier than we ever expected. But "ignorance is bliss" and we just "stayed the course". Meanwhile men were dying by the thousands.
"and the years do go"
The third verse is sort of a warning. This war is dragging on and on interminably. It is nothing but destruction now and if we keep it up we will lose everything.
