The Ghost Inside Our House Lyrics
We saw a ghost inside our house
Or was it wishful thinking?
Oh God, don't leave us by ourselves
Or we're bound to take up drinking
Please send us a miracle
So I know that there is meaning
I said, "I think that it's a miracle
Just to be breathing"
So live on
Baby live on
Live on
Baby live on
Packed up my clothes in a grocery bag
I'm going to find the creator
An old man in the clouds or a happy little alien
Whoever it is I need to thank her
And even though I don't know God
I'm happy with the mystery
And I'm certain that I feel it
Every time that you sing to me
Songs
Life is like a song
It's a song
A hummable song
I watched you sleep until 5 am
Cause I want to be part of your dreaming
Oh Love, don't leave me by myself
Or I'm bound to lose my meaning
We'll start a little family
And call it our religion
Hunt for ghosts inside our house
'Cause we'll never give up wishing
That we live on
May we live on
In our song
Our hummable song
Or was it wishful thinking?
Oh God, don't leave us by ourselves
Or we're bound to take up drinking
So I know that there is meaning
I said, "I think that it's a miracle
Just to be breathing"
Baby live on
Live on
Baby live on
I'm going to find the creator
An old man in the clouds or a happy little alien
Whoever it is I need to thank her
I'm happy with the mystery
And I'm certain that I feel it
Every time that you sing to me
Life is like a song
It's a song
A hummable song
Cause I want to be part of your dreaming
Oh Love, don't leave me by myself
Or I'm bound to lose my meaning
And call it our religion
Hunt for ghosts inside our house
'Cause we'll never give up wishing
May we live on
In our song
Our hummable song

I think that the Ghost in the house is his son, kaiden. He doesn't want the memory of Kaiden to leave "Oh Love, don't leave me by myself Or I'm bound to lose my meaning" it could also be his wife- but my favorite part is
"I'm going to find the creator An old man in the clouds or a happy little alien Whoever it is I need to thank her
And even though I don't know God I'm happy with the mystery"
I completely believe it. He captures the confusion in my own faith, and i connect deeply to those words. Knowing there must be something greater out there.
I love this song, it's possibly my favorite song by cloud cult. So beautiful and elegant.
ugh, dead children are never something to be spoken about. every time i look at lyrics here it has someone go "THIS IS A SONG ABOUT HIS DEAD SON!!" and it just makes me cringe. Yeah, it's obvious, everyone is thinking it, no one needs to say it. it's one thing that he writes songs about it, that's his right, that's how he copes, and calling attention to it does just that, call attention to something that is simply upsetting and senseless. it just makes me uncomfortable, and i think it would make anyone with children uncomfortable. two cents.
First off, amiantos, it is a sad thing when a child dies but covering the fact that it happens up like some dirty secret will only make it hurt worse.
This song, to me, is about transition. At first he is singing about feeling desperately alone, and pleading for a miracle. But then, he realizes "it's a miracle ust to be breathing" and his outlook begins to change. He realizes that God's identity isn't all that important, and that he's thankful for what he's been given instead of wanting more. He also discovers how much he loves his significant other, because their singing fills him with the same awe as his thoughts of the mysterious creator. He reveres them in an almost religious way. And, finally, he wants to settle down and have a family, and that's the only rigid lines of belief he needs. Now he's ready to look for ghosts again, but instead of it being a desperate grasp at fulfilment, it's an optimism "that we live on, may we live on, in our song, our hummable song."
The first time I heard this song I had not know about the death of the singers son, so my interpretation is different from the other ones. I think this song is about a guy searching for God. To him life is a sing a long, and he searches for ghost because he needs to know that after we're gone our hummalong doesn't end.
