Sweetbreads Lyrics
when i was a little boy,
i threw away my action toys
while i became obsessed
with operation
with hearts and minds and certain glands,
you learn to keep a steady hand, and thus began a morbid fascination
with sweetbreads
i could taste what you were thinking
ooh, sweetbreads
that's the taste of neurons
blinking
do you wonder where the self resides?
is it in your head, or between your sides?
and who's gonna
decide it's true location?
cos it's a
question for the centuries,
from communion to mad cow disease
but is it worthy of a song
or life's location?
oh, and the sweetest sweetbread
of them all
within the kingdom of our fall [??]
call of thoughts [??], and many foreign nations
they call them sweetbreads
i could taste what you were thinking
ooh, sweetbreads
that's the taste of neurons
blinking
does the thought of bile that's red and black,
the thought of tongues that taste you back,
fill you with a nauseous elation?
where a simple trip to the grocery store
could fill you with an abject whore
can you taste the misery
of those crustaceans?
oh, and the sweetest sweetbread of them all
within the kingdom of our fall [??]
and it shoulda caused some
sightly machinations
they call them sweetbreads
i could taste what you were thinking
ooh, sweetbreads
that's the tase of neurons blinking
oh, i could taste what you were thinking
oh, give me your thoughts about
sweetbreads
i threw away my action toys
while i became obsessed
with operation
with hearts and minds and certain glands,
you learn to keep a steady hand, and thus began a morbid fascination

apparently some kind of bizarre precursor to dark matter?
when listening to this song on Fingerlings, did anyone else notice how small the live audience is? It was recorded back in 2002, but that goes to show the popularity he's gained. yay!
in the kingdom of afar and I hear "caught on thoughts"
At the concert in Boston that I went to, he was describing where this song came from. He said he had a dream of flipping through a French cookbook, and then he came upon a page entitled 'Sweetbreads', and in parenthesis it said 'Thoughts'. Then he goes on to say how it might be possible to eat the brain to find out what something is about. It's a lovely song and the explanation he gave was really cute - I have the video of him talking about it if anybody wants to watch it.
Pretty sure it's "neurons blinking". I take it the "sweetest sweetbread of them all" is brains, since that would be the only organ to get caught on thoughts, or to make any secret machinations/schemes.
