Winter Lyrics

Dunno if I'll make it through this winter without you by my side,
I waited for you so long while I travelled far and wide,
Convinced myself there's no one better, so how could I deny
Your love, it's like a thorn into my side

My friends they understand me better but don't whisper goodnight
I want a lover and a sister, but we know that's not right
You used to listen to my music, I always wonder why
I wish I could pretend you make me try

I want the days to come, I want these sleepless nights to end
I lie here thinking how I lost you to all your stupid friends
You made me feel so foolish for the twenty-secondth time
Your love might be the last time that I try

Don't know if I'll make it through this winter without you on my own
I waited here for you forever, I can't believe you'd go
I may not have the answers, but I'd rather never know
Your love was such a heavy, heavy blow

Goodnight my love, you seemed so nice 'til I knew you better
Now I can tell you're always thinking twice about what might be better
On the outside, there's no conscience, you're a victim of your cautiousness
You don't try, you just lie there hoping that someone will come to make it right

Does this song sound a lot like The Magnetic Fields' "My Only Friend" to you too?

What a great song. It sums up a relationship I just left absolutely perfectly, eerily well in fact.

To me, it's about one person in a relationship giving everything they have to make the relationship work, convincing themselves along the way that the partner is completely worth the amount they've given up for them and that they'll never find anyone better. Then the other person ends the relationship, making the person who had put everything on the line feel like a fool and start to doubt themselves, because they still love that person.

"Goodnight my love, you seemed so nice 'til I knew you better Now I can tell you're always thinking twice about what might be better On the outside, there's no conscience, you're a victim of your cautiousness You don't try, you just lie there hoping that someone will come to make it right "

Those lines to me hint that the partner had commitment issues and personal problems that she thought would be fixed by someone else, and so she doesn't (or didn't) try in the relationship. The singer is looking back bitterly at a fact that was always there but he didn't choose to acknowledge.

These lyrics are so fantastic.

Basically the relationship ended because she is realising there might be more than just him in the world and he's crushed.

I'm not sure that's it. I think he's crushed because she's scared to put herself on the line, and he can't continue the relationship with her.. check the last stanza.

yes! yes it does OVNS! both songs are amazing.

evanreyes is spot-on. also about a strenuous relationship that has him doubting everything he's done due to her inability to put herself on the line and it was heartbreaking considering all he had done for her

I feel like evanreyes is on the right track too but we don't have to lend too much credibility to the lyricist. In his situation he would come up with rationalizations for her inaction (Now I can tell you're always thinking twice about what might be better). And trying to reduce her to something he overestimated in many ways. Heartbreaking , yea: you can write song, or post comments in these moments of empowerment, but you're still waiting for them

this is perfect.

My Opinion

This could not be any closer to what happened to me last week. And it's still in winter. Weird how that works, huh?

Thank you OVNS, I was driving myself crazy trying to figure out what song this sounded like. The melody is identical.
