Friend of Ours Lyrics
The heartbreaking closing track on "A Seldom Seen Kid" wrriten and performed for the Seldom Seen Kid himself, Bryan Glancy, a Manchester singer songwriter and best friend to Guy Garvey, Elbow's lead singer.
Bryan passed away in 2007 after a sudden illness. This is Garvey's tribute to him.
Something in the way the lines "Love you mate.." are delivered is simply heartbreaking. It's not that they're twee or sugary or naff. It's because it's sung very matter of factly, and very bluntly. It's clear it's from the heart.
Sitting at home and have listened to this song over and over and cant get over how amazing it is. Brings you to tears. love it. Brian RIP, Garvey has given you a song that is powerful for a lot of people.

This is such a beautiful song. I went to Salford Uni with Bryan. He died during the second year. I didn't know him well because he was on a creative writing course and I was doing Literature but I spoke to him a little. We used to have a Lit meeting where we'd all read our writings to each other.. I remember he read a story he'd written and it was set in Israel, It was so vivid the way he told it, I felt like I was there. He was such a talented guy. I knew he played music but I had no idea just how much he'd done in his life until recently. This song sums him up wonderfully.
When Guy bumped into Bryan Glancy. Bryan would finish the conversation with 'Love ya mate'. Knowing this makes the song even more emotional. So sad.
Fuck this song really gets to me.. now I know what it's about. :(
man this song is so relaxing and so good. so much emotions in this song.
This song is amazing. There are very few words but the emotion and the mood portrayed by the music and Garvey's voice is astounding.
This song is so beautiful and honest, the more if you know the background of it (For Bryan, reads the inscription on The seldom seen kid booklet). Wonderful music by elbow, to my opinion the summum of emotional/melancholical but especially honest music.
I'd like them to sing this song live, but it would be gut renching if people there who were not really listening to the song chatted through it. It would be like disrespecting Bryan and his friends, so it might be better if they don't.
they have with the bbc performance orchestra....it is beautiful

This is one of my favourite Elbow songs. Its simple words some up the complex emotions related to a friend dying, I don't think anyone could have ever put it better. Elbow: Bringing back meaningful songs in a time where people are forgetting the simple pleasures of real music.
it is "Salford skyline blue" not "Salford skyline gloom". Everywhere seems to have this wrong but if you check the lyrics printed on the album cover/digital booklet, you will see.
Great song.
