American Hearts Lyrics
We were raised by wolves
And we are still wild
And we howl when the troubled wind blows
And in the TV's blue light
Oh, assassins will lie
Every wail just a-goin' down slow
So don't tread on me
For I am your brother
I was born with an American heart
And don't tread on her
For she is your sister
She was born with an American heart
All the people you meet
Down in the streets
May be good but they don't wanna know
So they cover their eyes, for
Who wants to be sad?
Life is sweet at the bottom of the sea
And don't tread on me
For I am your brother
I was born with an American heart
And don't tread on her
For she is your sister
She was born with an American heart
And the mothers will cry,
Fathers stay up all night
With the worry that goes to the bones
And if your God makes war
Then he's no God I know
'Cause Christ would not send boys to die
And don't tread on me
For I am your brother
I was born with an American heart
And don't tread on her
For she is your sister
She was born with an American heart
Don't you get low as hell
When the peace dove is felled
By men with the blackest of minds
And above the din
Let the sighin' begin
As we're bound for the longest of days
So don't tread on me
For I am your brother
I was born with an American heart
And don't tread on her
For she is your sister
She was born with an American heart
And we are still wild
And we howl when the troubled wind blows

This song is one of a kind.
Don't you get low as hell/When the peace dove is felled/By men with the blackest of minds. I can't even begin to explain how much I love this part of the song - it's just amazing how he sings it and how true it really is. I love it.
I'm pretty sure its "the assassins they lie, as we watch, we're all going down slow"

Truly cannot believe no one has commented on AA Bondy yet. His voice is beautiful and his songs will stab you in the heart when you least expect it.
What erinx3 said :) Perfect cover of a neil young song, it's simplistic but so beautiful
Anthemic.
I always thought this song was about the events of September 11th 2001. Which makes the lines "And if your God makes war / Then he's no God I know / 'Cause Christ would not send boys to die"about jihad. I also heart the line "By men with the blackest of minds" as "by the man" representing bin Laden.
Have to disagree - I think he's talking about (allegedly) Christian American leaders sending their boys off to die in the Middle East. Why would jihadists care what Christ thinks?

@recklessrachelx Have to disagree also, men with the blackest of minds refers to the senators pushing for wars like Iraq, afghanistan, etc.. the very same senators that are big shareholders and/or ex-CEO's of companies that make military hardware and weapons

@recklessrachelx Well, coming from the small town in upstate NY where he recorded and wrote the song, I have to say, I was surprised the story behind the song was not more publicly known as it was up here. A 20 year old boy from up here joined the army after September 11, as many people did feel a patriotic calling to service. He fought in the campaign and went back to Afghanistan after seeing what was happening over there. Back at home his sister was a strong anti-war advocate. There was this split in the town over the...

He fought in the campaign and went back to Afghanistan after seeing what was happening over there. Back at home his sister was a strong anti-war advocate. There was this split in the town over the two ideologies that ran through the family and the town. He was captured and killed in battle in Afghanistan and later his sister took he life. They were both buried at sea.
One of my favorite songs. Ever.
Fascinating song. Just listened to it via Youtube. Don't care for one line, though: "And if your God makes war then he's no God I know 'Cause Christ would not send boys to die." God does not make war; man (with his/her free will) chooses to go to war. We were born with original sin thanks to Adam and Eve, and it is within our power to make the tough choices. Man created the need for war and the ability to fight wars. And, yes, unfortunately at times there is a 'need"....consider the Jews who could not reason with a man like Hitler. Other than that unfair and dishonest jab at God, this track is excellent.
well, obviously he is referencing the fact that people, of all religions, misunderstand their faith and personally (or are brainwashed to) believe that they are supposed to kill for their god. He is most definitely not saying that he thinks that other "gods" make war.

@TurnMeOn Yea at first I thought that he was blaming God for wars, but the context I believe he is singing about is the gods that do stir up wars like Allah for example.
