Transliterator Lyrics

Lady future's arms are lily white
They stretch before you come inside
There's room enough, she's generous
Come on, come up while we're still young
I want to live a life from a prison
I want your uninvited altruisms
The homemade weapons you are fashioning
Are hellbent on doing us both in

You better mean what you say
Why don't you say what you mean
I never get anywhere
I get the space in between
Beautifully mutilated
Instantly antiquated
I will admit I almost always underestimate it

Let's begin at the beginning
Let us revisit the past
Like when the houselights start dimming
In silver screen photograph
It makes a beautiful sound
When nobody else is around
It has a wonderful way
Of eating up entire days

We'll go swimming in libations
Forgive unexplained lacerations
These otherworldly manifestations
I wanna live in the breath you are wasting

(We go over again)
(Let's wash our hands of everything)
You better mean what you say
Why don't you say what you mean
I never get anywhere
I get the space in between
Beautifully mutilated
Instantly antiquated
I will admit I almost always underestimate it
(You don't owe them anything)

No, you don't owe them anything

You never mean what you say
Why don't you say what you mean
I never get anywhere
I get the space in between
Beautifully mutilated
Instantly antiquated
I will admit I almost always underestimate it

(Here we go again)
You never mean what you say
Why don't you say what you mean
I never get anywhere
I get the space in between
(Wash our hands of everything)
Beautifully mutilated
Instantly antiquated
I will admit I almost always underestimate it

I could've sworn it was "You never mean what you say"...

Pity the words after "come on, come on, while we're still young" are indecipherable, but then, I suppose that's Nick's charm.

firstly he is saying "better" but then in the second part of song he is saying "never" ;)

Um I think the beginning goes as:

Laid in future's arms So lily white I stretch before you come inside There's room enough, she's generous Come on, come on, while we're still young

I wanna love you like from a prison I wanna love you like an actual reason The homemade weapons that you're fashioning up (Don't know last line)

(After you better mean part) It's big enough the beginning Let us revisit the past Like when the house lights are dimming Like silver screen (don't know) It makes a beautiful sound when nobody else is around It (or He) has a wonderful way of eating up entire days

The last part I can't make out then it's just the repetition of the chorus. I tried.

It's "houselights," not "horselights." What the heck are horselights? Houselights refer to the lights in a theater before the show starts.

Man, still no one has any interpretations for this song? This is my favorite DeVotchKa song, I guess because it's the first one I heard and it's so different. Though I guess it might easily be a political song about Bush or something. I dunno. Awesome song.

lol...horselights...that's funny

i'd guess this girl has had some trouble in the past and the singer is trying to help her through it. the future is bright, let's move on, start taking responsiblity and get going (with the singer)

fav line..."forgive unexplained lacerations"...had some of those, and how comforting it would be to have someone say that to you and not judge you...

...still laughing at the horselights

It seems like most of their songs are about relationships. This one is no exception. Lady Future's arms are lily white: the beginning of a relationship, where nothing is yet written on the slate of it. The homemade weapons: just the nastiness of fighting words. The chorus speaks for itself. ...revisit the past - to see where it went wrong? Forgive unexplained lacerations: the wounds that are inflicted on each other. We can all live in the breath you are wasting.. speaks for itself as well.

IMHO

I just love DeVotchKa
