Sausalito Lyrics
Hair blowing in the hot wind
Time hanging from a clothespin
There's no sorrow that the sun's not going to heal
I smell the leather of your new car
Drive through the desert after nightfall
Sleep on the shoulder, keep the stars all to ourselves
The kind of love that makes my back hurt
Wearing nothing but a t-shirt
She's turning over on a mattress made of air
I close my eyes, I see a staircase
Leading upwards into blank space
All of creation makes a sound too soft to hear
So I remain between her legs
Sheltered from all my fears
While bikers glide by highway shrines
Where pilgrims disappear
Know that trouble's been your good friend
Catch your company on the weekend
Catch your company even once your mind was made
You said, "It's over and it's finished"
And a headache's all you left with
We're no different, I've got debts I'd like to pay
We should move to Sausalito
Living's easy on a house boat
Let the ocean rock us back and forth to sleep
And in the morning when the sun rise
Look in the water, see the blue sky
As if heaven has been laid there at our feet
So we remain between these waves
Sheltered for all our years
While bikers glide by highway shrines
Where pilgrims disappear
Where time takes icebergs
Where fields burn westward
Where pilgrims disappear
Time hanging from a clothespin
There's no sorrow that the sun's not going to heal
I smell the leather of your new car
Drive through the desert after nightfall
Sleep on the shoulder, keep the stars all to ourselves
Wearing nothing but a t-shirt
She's turning over on a mattress made of air
I close my eyes, I see a staircase

All of creation makes a sound too soft to hear

I've seen this song with the title "Sausalito", although I'm not sure if that's the official title or not.
i like like like this song makes me want to go live on a house boat in sausolito
this is the best song i think off the new cd personally. its the kind of song that makes you run away. and there is no better kind of song.
i agree 100%

I think he's being sarcastic about wanting to live in Sausalito. It's a rich republican town just north of San Francisco, if I remember correctly. It's the place where sold-out hipppies go to die after they've caved and used their Berkeley degrees for evil.
Ok. Definitely not. First of, Sausalito is one of the most liberal chill spots in the US. It is rich. But NOT republican.

Also I don't think it is meant to be a sarcastic reference. Conor Oberst truly sees sausalito as an escapist paradise. I live there. It kinda is. Easily the most beautiful and inspiring towns in the world. I may be biased though.

John Norris of MTV News commented to Oberst that he felt this was like a driving song, a little bit of a road song. Oberst responded: "Yeah, it's definitely an escapist song. I think it makes a lot of sense, road trip... [Sausalito] is a very beautiful place. As much as it sounds romantic to live on a boat, I don't think I would like it that much. I'm kind of a solid-ground person."
The song is about escapism.
what is the kind of love that makes your back hurt??!!?!? scratching on his back while they're doing it?!?!

Anybody know who does the backing vocals on this song?
I saw him play this last night in York, England and although i can't remember what he said word for word he said something like "This is a song about thoughts of running away to California, you may have had them yourself or still have them, i know i have. But do it. Run away."
The Mystic Valley Band. They do all the backing vocals on this album. At least they did when I saw him.
