Verse Chorus Verse (Box-Set) Lyrics
Neither side is sacred, no one wants to win
Feeling so sedated, may I just give in?
Takin' medication till my stomach's full
Neither side is sacred, crawling in a hole
The grass is greener over here
You're the fog that keeps me clear
Reinventing what we knew
Taken time is all but true
You're the reason I feel pain
Feels so good to feel again
Neither side is sacred, no one wants to win
Feeling so sedated, but I can't give in
Takin' medication till my stomach's full
Feeling so sedated when I'm in my home
The grass is greener over here
You're the fog that keeps it clear
Reinventing what we knew
Taken time is weird but true
You're the reason I feel pain
Feels so good to feel again
Neither side is sacred, no one wants to win
Feeling so sedated, may I just give in?
Takin' medication till my stomach's full
Feeling so sedated when I'm in my home
The grass is greener over here
You're the fog that keeps it clear
Reinventing what we knew
Love is history, all but true
You're the reason I feel pain
Feels so good to feel again
Feeling so sedated, may I just give in?
Takin' medication till my stomach's full
Neither side is sacred, crawling in a hole
You're the fog that keeps me clear

For me this is one of the songs that hit me really hard, and i can relate to it all to well. i have bipolar, so the line "neither side is sacred, noone wants to win" is like the two moods (depression and mania) conflicting but neither sticks. and "taking medication till my stomach's full" is pretty self explantory. when you have bipolar you have to tak loads of meds, for me it's about 10-12 pills aday!
and i've heard that Kurt might have had bipolar, judging from everything i've read about him (not to mention the song 'lithium' (most common drug for bipolar/schizopheria)) i would think it was very likely he suffered from it..... and "you're the reason i feel pain" might be about the disorder, it's very easy to start personifying the illness, "feels so good to feel again" i can relate to that too, generally with bipolar you feel the extreems that most people can't even imagine, but sometimes with the depression you just feel numb, so then feeling anything, even if it's horrible, is a bit of a relief.
to me its just about modern society, politics, religion, whatever. neither side is sacred, as in the two-party system in america and how both sides are equally evil. "taking medication til our stomachs full" is about the people who need medication for everything. it could be about a girl too, or maybe drugs, that keeps him from going insane in this world... she or it is the fog that keeps him clear. sounds a lot like its about courtney but i dont know when he wrote this so i could be wrong
I believe its "Take the time to find the truth" instead of "Learn from history and we will to".
I'd have to say this is my all-time favorite Nirvana song. Personaly, I think whoever decided not to put it on the album should get a swift kick to the nuts. shrug
Oh, and I've heard a lot of people say its about god. Makes a lot of sense, all the references like "You're the fog that keeps it clear" and "You're the reason I feel pain, feels so good to feel again". Though I could be wrong.
i think its about his heroin addiction. neither side is sacred no one wants to win: neither quitting or staying on heroin is going to turn out well and no one really wants to win the battle of addiction. feelin so sedated i think ill just give in: saying quiting is making him sick and hell just do it again. taking medication until our stomachs full: trying alot of medication to quit. neither side is sacred crawling in my hole: hes goin to go back into his comfort place( heroin). and the chorus is just about why he likes heroin...

wow only one comment? holy shit.
this song is great. even though i dont know what it means
I always thought it was sappy. Its not (thanks youtube), and so its the last nirvana song that I heard for the first time. Fuking awesome.
Great song but I really couldn't give you an accurate meaning of it. Maybe being so in love it hurts? I don't know.
Maybe its about a Cause that no one fights for... "Neither side is sacred no one wants to win" No one is really trying. "Feeling so sedated think Ill just give in" I don't feel like it anymore. "Taking medication till our stomachs full" Medicine doesn't heal the problem just the symptoms. "Neither side is sacred crawling in my hole" I think I'll just give up. "The grass is greener over hear, your the fog that keeps me clear" If we keep fighting it will get better and this is the cause that keeps me going. "Reinventing what we knew take the time and I'll be true" Maybe we should try new ways and I'll help the cause like that. "Your the reason I feel pain but it feels so good to feel again" Maybe the cause is why my life isn't working out (Socially or Economically) The last line "It feels so good to feel again" is my favorite line. Honestly I think hes talking about how it makes him feel awsome to suffer for someone else and how he feels he gained innoncence and caring back. It means so much to me because it's kind of the way I feel lately. Knowing millions of people die and just not caring. Anyways its kind of a wierd interperation and a different meaning that Kurt would usually put in his songs.
That just my interperation though.

It's about Tobi Vail and some of the experiences Kurt had living in the Olympian social scene in '90. Most of Nevermind is about these subjects, particularly Tobi Vail (from Bikini Kill, for those who don't know, and whom he "dated" in 1990 for awhile).
