The Pretenders Lyrics

Sally wake up you dont have to pretend anymore
Cause while you were sleeping I drove us to someplace the weather will always be warm
We can go outside and bury our faces in the sun
Theres no need to worry cuz no one will ask us where it is that we came from
We can walk on main street, dance in these honky tonk bars
No one will know who we are

You like the water so much that you could be a fish
We're right by the ocean so you can go dipping any old time that you wish
We'll watch the sunset, make love in the old lifeguard stand
When the setting is done, we've lost the sun, we'll nap on a blanket of sand
We can walk on water, dance in the light of the moon
Honey, just me and you

We'll wake to a restaurant with fancy napkins and plates
We watch the old man as he walks to the big white piano and sits down and plays
the maitre'd calls me lucky as he pours our wine
what a beautiful girl and i know in this world that the good ones are so hard to find
We can walk on red carpet, dance to our favorite songs
We can stay all night long

Sally wake up you dont have to pretend anymore
Cause while you were sleeping I drove us to someplace the weather will always be warm

I like to believe that this is a BEAUTIFUL song about an old couple who are near their deaths, and the man is describing to his wife what it will be like when they pass. He is reassuring her that the afterlife will be beautiful, and everything they want it to be. It truely is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard, regardless of what he meant by it.

I interpret this song to be about a couple that decided to escape. To get away from everyone and everything in their lives for whatever reason so they won't have to pretend to be themselves anymore. I think it's a song about love and the desired freedom that goes along with it. I know that when I was in love, my significant other and I always daydreamed about running away from reality together to a warm place like the ocean. I think that's why I love this song so much.

To me this song is describing true love...

After reading the last comment I can see where the afterlife comes into play.. but I never saw it that way before.

This song it my absolute favorite in the world... simply because its LOVE. --makes me cry everytime.

I think that the song is about two homeless people on the street in a city like New York. They are in love and struggling to stay alive in the wet weather and freezing cold. I imagine that just prior to the beginning of this song, he (being the voice in the song) told Sally to lie still as if she was sleeping to escape detection wherever they are. Thus he begins the song with, "Sally wake up you don't have to pretend any more." The rest of the song I believe is his attempts to convince her of her better life if she would only wake up. His phrasing of "burying our faces in the sun" sounds like someone who wants to get warm, not to mention the whole beach verse. "Where no one will ask us where it is that we came from." sounds like a person who is often in places where he is not welcome. I do not think these homeless people are very old (at least not elderly) the beach verse doesn't sound like an older couple's actions. The verse about the restaurant is definitely my favorite. It is another reason why I do not think that these people are from any sort of money, they way that he is glamorizing the restaurant. The saddest thing about this song is the ending, "Sally wake up you dont have to pretend anymore Cause while you were sleeping I drove us to someplace the weather will always be warm." I do not believe that it is just simply the artist re-singing the introduction. I think that the man still cannot get Sally to wake up and is getting desperate.
