I wish I could do better by you
Cause that's what you deserve
You sacrifice so much of your life
In order for this to work

While I'm off chasing my own dreams
Sailing around the world
Please know that I'm yours to keep
My beautiful girl

When you cry a piece of my heart dies
Knowing that I may have been the cause
If you were to leave
Fulfill someone else's dreams
I think I might totally be lost

You don't ask for no diamond rings
No delicate string of pearls
That's why I wrote this song to sing
My beautiful girl

Ooooo ooo ohhh ohh oh oh
Ooooo ooo ohhh ohh oh oh
Ooooo ooo ohhh ohh oh oh
Ooooo ooo ohhh ohh oh oh

I wish I could do better by you
Cause that's what you deserve
You sacrifice so much of your life
In order for this to work

While I'm off chasing my own dreams
Sailing around the world
Please know that I'm yours to keep
My beautiful girl

And when you cry a piece of my heart dies
Knowing that I may have been the cause
If you were to leave
Fulfill someone else's dreams
I think I might totally be lost

But you don't ask for no diamond rings (diamond rings)
No delicate string of pearls (string of pearls)
That's why I wrote this song to sing
My beautiful girl

Ooooo ooo ohhh ohh oh oh
Ooooo ooo ohhh ohh oh oh
Ooooo ooo ohhh ohh oh oh
Ooooo ooo ohhh ohh oh oh

But you don't ask for no diamond rings (diamond rings)
No delicate string of pearls (string of pearls)
That's why I wrote this song to sing
My beautiful girl (my beautiful girl)

i always forget that the piano part is still this song. It jsut doesnt really fit, but it is pretty. Also, does anyone have the definate lyrics for the piano part? the parts he kinda whispers?

    k. meaning is basically exactly as Sakari stated: "He's in love with a girl who does everything for him to keep the relationship working. Even though he's off doing his own thing and what he wants, he promises to be faithful to her and he hates to see her sad because he think it's his fault."

he just wants it to work.

the part about seeing her cry is really powerful, and the entire verse with "i'm yours to keep" is amazing.

i love how the song transitions from sortof slow/normal pace, then transitions to louder and mroe energetic to practically doleful. it's interesting

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
