This song is trully one of the most beautiful. the song was written by andy butler and he has stated that it was about being gay when he was a teenager and the advice he would give to himself. its also intresting to note that almost if not all members of the band are openly gay. clearly its a song of hope "the stars could only get brighter". though i think its a song that allows you to take your own message and meaning from the lyrics.

Everything is about perception and naturally, most listeners and readers will have their own interpretation of the lyrics. That's the beauty and sometimes danger, of music. In the end, only the writer/writers really know the story behind the lyrics–if there was one to begin with.
Initially, this song was a heartbreak-type song that involved that final stage where you're finally over your ex lover. For whatever reason, things just didn't work out. You're at that point where you finally realize that it's truly over, a painful truth that can be hard to face and a lonely process, at that. That's how my brain processed this song at first.
But then, I REALLY listened to every word and after reading about its real meaning to the writer himself, it made almost perfect sense! Very introspective song.
It's about being queer in this society. From a very young age, he had high hopes that things would make more sense–that one day, he'd be able to finally shed light and fully embrace his differentness in order to make existence more enjoyable.
I don't know, my head is analyzing this song so hard right now! I will have to continue my thoughts in writing at a later time. For now, I shall listen to this song on repeat. Cheers!

Andy Butler said this song is about growing up being gay. The gay folklore promises young gay kids that when they grow up, move to a big liberal city or school, they will find love, peace, acceptance, a community, and pride instead of the misery ("darkness") they experience now. These are the "stars", that are getting closer.
I'm pretty sure it's not "present my presence" but "present my present". The stars didn't give this "present". Instead, many gay people are still tormented and broken by their sometimes incredibly traumatizing experiences of bullying, self-loathing and not being accepted, and the gay meccas aren't all that they're cracked up to be. So, you need to look inside yourself.
