In 1979 the Labour government was brought down over its failure to grant even limited autonomy to Scotland as had been promised in its manifesto. Disastrously, the following election saw Margaret Thatcher installed as Prime Minister and ushered in the nightmare scenario of years of right-wing Tory government. Since then we've seen the systematic erosion of our civil liberties, the destruction of the trade union movement and the wholesale dismantling of the welfare state and National Health Service - not to mention increased state control of television and the press, and the abolition of the right to silence.
