I was driving out of there as fast as a Camry could
But the interstate was flooded and I had to take the road through the woods
Bad move in retrospect, the road disappeared in the rain
And I stood on the brakes when I saw the sign: "Lake Pontchartrain"
Darius was yelling that he saw somebody out in the swells
He jumped out runnin' and Noland was goin' as well
"Come back!" Why the hell would they leave the car?
And that's when I heard it, make no mistake
the voices were calling them from under the lake.

Wait, I got it. It's all the crawfish! The only one who survived is also the only one who didn't eat the crawfish.
Noland? That doesn't seem right. I'm still not sure if it's Nolan or Owen, but it's definitely not Noland.

i think this is about hurricane katrina or one of the hurricanes i can't remember which one. but me and my mom were talking about it, lake ponchartrain is really in florida i guess, right where one of the major hurricanes were. and that would explain why the road was flooded so he had to go a different way and it took him to lake ponchartrain. as for the crawfish, i'm still trying to figure that one out.
Okay, so. Here're my thoughts.
The line, "Everything water can be," seems far too sinister for the alleged/implied deaths of Darius and "Noland" (I personally think it's Nolan) to be blamed all on the crawfish.
What I think is that the promise of "Crawfish til the bitter end" is just a sinister reinforcement of the lake, trying to lure people there? Crawfish DO seem rather popular in Louisiana.
So, the lake has some things to help lure people into it. The illusion of someone in the water, to lure good samaritans that want to help the person into the lake, the crawfish to lure anyone who just enjoys crawfish into the lake, etc. And the voices urging the people to "Come down to Lake Pontchartrain."
So, I don't think the crawfish had as much to do with it as everyone is saying. I think the crawfish were just a pawn and that it was indeed the lake that "killed" Darius and Nolan. The lake is some sort of paranormal phenomena in this story, and it literally swallowed Darius and Nolan in the shallows. (Hence the lyrics, "Wade to where the shallows break/There you will get to see/Everything water can be.")

Okay i agree with the questioned for murder thing but i dont think the actual lake ate them, i think it was the craw fish.. like cursed craw fish or whatever.. thats why the crawfish were singing come down to lake ponhutrain, cause they wanted anouther tasty human to eat.. but they only eat the ones that eat them...or maybe they turn them in to crawfish and like.. feed them to the next people that want to eat thim.. vicious cycle much?? anyway.. idk thats just what i though.. and yeah scooby do did pop in my head first time...

When i imagine him singing this, i imagine him being questioned by the police for the murder of him friends. how he's like "That's how it happened, why would I lie? There were no bodies, I've got none to hide" like, he's trying to convince the police he's innocent. (:
Lake Pontchartrain is about a man who poisons some Crawfish to kill his 'friends' Noland, and Darius. He then hides them in Lake Pontchartrain which is known for being the lake with the most murder victim bodies discovered. This is his story to the Authorities.
This reminds me of Scooby Doo for some reason lol, the more I read the lyrics though the more it seems the dude killed his friends and is making up a story to cover his ass. The 26th seems so far away!

By far one of my favorites on the cd. I don't think it needs much explanation. But it's amazing. I kind of agree with what MarkieP said. ha.
