Television Lyrics
I've been sleepin' on the street
maybe we could start somethin'
All our troubles work that way
I would, I would wait for the day
It's a thousand mile trek
to that place from where we're at
I would, I would take you today
pretend everything's okay
Another TV show,
about gettin' in control
But I can't seem to consecrate this fire into gold
I would, I would take you today
pretend everything's okay
Catcall driver on the road
with his windows locked and closed
I could, I could scare you away
pretend everything's okay
If there's somethin' I could do--
so you'd make your mind up too
I would, I would do it today
Pretend everything's okay
Another TV show
about gettin' in control
But I can't seem to consecrate this fire into gold.
If luck could take it's turn maybe I'd finally have control--
Darling you've gotta let me know
Should I stay or should I go?
maybe we could start somethin'
All our troubles work that way
I would, I would wait for the day
to that place from where we're at
I would, I would take you today
pretend everything's okay
about gettin' in control
But I can't seem to consecrate this fire into gold
pretend everything's okay
with his windows locked and closed
I could, I could scare you away
pretend everything's okay
so you'd make your mind up too
I would, I would do it today
Pretend everything's okay
about gettin' in control
But I can't seem to consecrate this fire into gold.
Should I stay or should I go?

"But I can't seem to consecrate this fire into gold" i like that line and i think its basically about getting his life under control. Turning the bad stuff into good stuff.
Actually maybe a brreak up song i dunnooooo
i see it as a song about an imperfect relationship. i think the lyrics express the person's desire to make it an amazing, great relationship where they are in ~perfect harmony~, but "it's a thousand mile trek" and a lot of work that may not yield the desired results. the speaker wants it, but their lover may not be as invested as they are, which prompts the ending question: "darling, you gotta let me know-- should i stay, or should i go?"
i also think the "fire" is their rocky relationship, which the speaker wants to turn golden.
