Why Lyrics

The buttons on my phone are worn thin
I don't think that I knew the chaos I was getting in.
But I've broken all my promises to you
I've broken all my promises to you.

Why do you do this to me?
Why do you do this so easily?
You make it hard to smile because
You make it hard to breathe
Why do you do this to me?

A phrasing that's a single tear,
Iis harder than I ever feared
And you were left feeling so alone.
Because these days aren't easy
Like they have been once before
These days aren't easy anymore.

Why do you do this to me?
Why do you do this so easily?
You make it hard to smile because
You make it hard to breathe
Why do you do this to me?
To me, to me, to me...

I should've known this wasn't real
And fought it off and fought to feel
What matters most? Everything
That you feel while listening to every word that I sing.
I promise you I will bring you home
I will bring you home.

Why do you do this to me?
Why do you do this so easily?
You make it hard to smile because
You make it hard to breathe
Why do you do this to me?

Why do you do this to me?
Why do you do this so easily?
You make it hard to smile because
You make it hard to breathe
Why do you do this to me?
To me, to me, to me...

this has to be the best song on the new album for me. maybe because it hits me hard right now. i feel like its bout an old love you once had. and now its just so hard to get away from that feeling. the days just seem to get hard when they are whats on your mind. u love someone so much n discover in the end that maybe the other person never felt the same way. "I should've known this wasn't real"

I feel like this song is about being SO in love with someone, you're actually at the point where you will never be convinced you're doing enough. You will always feel you've come up short and not done something you should have. You'll obsess over it (verse one). You'll remember the way things were before you felt this way (verse two) when you knew how to love AND fulfill your own expectations of yourself. But this person will always DO THIS to you- they will cause you to care so much, you can't ever be satisfied with your level of commitment.

Notice he laments "breaking all [his] promises", but then he PROMISES AGAIN. Maybe this signifies the cycle of loving TOO much, lamenting your self-perceived inadequacies, and recommitting yourself. Only to realize, you've done it again. When he says "Why do you do this to me?" he is really saying "Why do you cause me to feel this way? So easily, you don't even try. You're just you."

I have a friend, my best friend in the world. She listens to this song like it's a drug. Compulsively; she can't get enough of it. And she doesn't understand why she loves it so much. I think, for her, the person described here isn't just one person, but everyone that she finds herself loving. She is always in pain, because no matter what she does, she's beating herself up for not doing enough to make the love perfect.

It's a beautiful song- once you discover this about it (sorta happened to me all at once while listening to it the other night) it becomes even better.

Here's what I think.

I think that he's singing the song to his current girlfriend. He's so completely in love with her. "Why do you do this to me?" I think this part is him pretty much saying that she still completely takes his breath away so easily. And it still overwhelms him. But I think he's saying that over time, they aren't the same as they were when they first began. Maybe they're growing further and further apart. He keeps breaking his promises. I think there's more to it, but I can't explain...

It seems partly mixed, contradictory, although not. Paradoxical, sort of.

"I promise I will bring you home" adds a different perspective, I think, to the song, than what has already been said.

I agree with BashTheFash. It does seem that there is something more to this song because of the lyric they pointed out. I am still trying to analyze it, but have no conclusion yet.

well what BashTheFash and Brandanwithana are talking about with the lryic - "I promise I will bring you home" i think it means that he will try to make her love him and come to him'. well?

"I promise I will bring you home"

home is a place where we can feel comfortable, a place we're familiar with. Home is reference to many things metaphorically in songs.

I think he means regardless of what she's done to him, he's going to try to make it better for her. He's going to try to make her feel at home again, like it used to be.

I should've known this wasn't real And fought it off and fought to feel What matters most? Everything That you feel while listening to every word that I sing. I promise you I will bring you home I will bring you home.

I think that means that he was pulling away from whoever he's singing to, and he realizes now, for some reason, how much he loves her and is trying to apologize for all the pain he caused her and whatnot. I think of "i should've known this wasn't real/and fought it off, fought to feel what matters most," as him fighting off the feeling of doubt he had at one point, to feel the love that was underneath it all.
