The meaning of this song is pretty obvious, he's had a fight with his partner, and is just wanting her back. It seems like he knows he's the wrong one, the lyrics in the bridge sorta suggest that the fight might have been over him not listening to her or anything.
It's a great song, and like all John's song, its something I can relate to..

this is one of my fav songs by them, they're such a great band:) if you hate this song, well you have bad taste then
this is one of my favorite songs on the album and it has so much meaning in my life. This song just pulls you in, you become one with the story and by the end you can feel all the heartbreak and all you want is for him to be happy again.

Whoever wrote the lyrics forgot the very last line:
"But I'd rather be here with you" I normally wouldn't say anything, but it's my absolute favorite line, in fact it's what makes this song my favorite on the album.
I can easily see that this song is about a difficult break up, or at least a rough patch in a relationship. Despite that, as soon as I heard this song, I couldn't help but mentally associate it with the long distance relationship I am in. The chorus, especially with the final line, made me notice and feel connected to this song. I guess beyond being about a break up, I interpret this song to just be about the difficulty of being apart from the person you love.
