Sea Out Lyrics
Oh, Marbella's on the run
In her eastern overcoat
Used to wear a light bulb dressing gown
Turn it on, then tear it down
Before we went to sleep
So Marbella upped and left
A tuba in a treble clef
Couldn't walk, she wouldn't cry
Dreaming was their only time
And dreams are half asleep
When they go sing out, sea out, sea out, sing out, sing out now
Sea out now, sing out now
Sing out, sing out, sing out, sing out, sing out now
Sea out now, sing out now
So a washed up carnival has just reduced me to my bones
I never did the washing up
I loved the stains on every cup
They were the only hint I had
Now Marbella's gone astray
Somewhere in this black'ning Milky Way
I used to colour in the holes
Now I leave them blank
Now it's only spaces I have cause to thank
Sing out, sing out, sing out, sing out, sing out now
Sing out now, sea out now
Sing out, sing out, sing out, sing out, sing out now
Sing out now, sing out
Well, Marbella is my guest
I treat her just like all the rest
Whisper fairytales of Neverland
Throw the pennies in her hand
Stroke her hair and tell her I've been cheating
Sing out, sing out, sing out, sing out, sing out now
Sing out now, sing out now
Sea out, sea out, sea out, sea out, sea out now
Sing out now, sing out now
In her eastern overcoat
Used to wear a light bulb dressing gown
Turn it on, then tear it down
Before we went to sleep
A tuba in a treble clef
Couldn't walk, she wouldn't cry
Dreaming was their only time
And dreams are half asleep
Sea out now, sing out now
Sing out, sing out, sing out, sing out, sing out now
Sea out now, sing out now
I never did the washing up
I loved the stains on every cup
They were the only hint I had
Somewhere in this black'ning Milky Way
I used to colour in the holes
Now I leave them blank
Now it's only spaces I have cause to thank
Sing out now, sea out now
Sing out, sing out, sing out, sing out, sing out now
Sing out now, sing out
I treat her just like all the rest
Whisper fairytales of Neverland
Throw the pennies in her hand
Stroke her hair and tell her I've been cheating
Sing out now, sing out now
Sea out, sea out, sea out, sea out, sea out now
Sing out now, sing out now

I love the piano solo version much better. It's so powerful and moving.
This song is incredible.
the table's have turned. he has never been faithful but has never stopped chasing her. but now he's done chasing and ready to just be content with who he is and what he wants. this song is very ambiguous and full of emotion.
did you come up with that theory based on the lyrics, or based on the scene in which this song was played on gossip girl. i think that could make sense for an explanation as to what the song means, i just want to know what gave you that idea, ya know?

It's about a guy who is in love with a girl he's treated badly. She's left him, and he's pining after her, but it turns out she's just one in a long line of similar woman and he'll soon move on to someone else, and the cycle will repeat itself.
I think.
Blahblah11 pretty much has it right, but I'm going to reiterate my opinion. :)
"Oh, Marbella's on the run" "So Marbella upped and left" " Now Marbella's gone astray" -The singer's girlfriend, Marbella, has feigned away from their relationship:
"I used to colour in the holes/ Now I leave them blank / Now it's only spaces I have cause to thank" -This means that she's left him and before he used to try to fix all the problems "the holes" in their relationship, but now he's letting it all go, and the space between them is satisfying to him.
"Well, Marbella is my guest/ I treat her just like all the rest / Whisper fairytales of Neverland /Throw the pennies in her hand / Stroke her hair and tell her I've been cheating" -So now Marbella has come back to him and wants things to just go back to the way they were. But now he just treats her like he does every other girl in his life, he doesn't love her anymore. And that's when he tells her that while she left him all alone, he moved on and "cheated on her" since they had not technically broken up.
Anyways, that's my two cents.
I had another thought. Marbella was a woman he treated badly who left him. Marbella at the end of the song is a different woman to the original one, but her refers to her as Marbella because he's still emotionally in a relationship with her. His 'cheating' refers to his emotional cheating with this woman Marbella that has ruined 'all the rest' of his relationships.
Marbella caused him to become emotionally detached and treat all the women in his life like prostitutes.
This is a close second to "Blue Would Still be Blue" for Guillemots songs that make me cry. I don't know what this song is or isn't about, all I know is it gets to me - every time. Maybe it's the very raw, emotional vocals by Fyfe, or maybe it's the simple melancholy tune. I'm basing this upon the solo piano version, by the way.
