It's About Time Lyrics
One more day down these stairs
His room is cold now and it hurts like hell
He holds tight, he stares
It’s almost over and it’s running through his head
They don’t know me, they don’t know more than I show
She’s walking up to him so slowly
It’s about time, it’s about time to fly away, but wait
This one is different cause she’s lonely
Fold your wings, you’ll need them more one day
One more smile, one more bed
Her eyes are dark now and they hurt like hell
She’s so still, she’s dead
She knows it’s over, she holds her head and says,
They can’t love me, they can’t love what I don’t show
He’s walking up to her so slowly
It’s about time, it’s about time to fly away, but wait
This one is different cause he’s lonely
Fold your wings, you’ll need them more
There have been too many times when I’ve drowned you with these perfect lines
And you’ve heard me say that I can cure you
This morning I woke up with this overwhelming fear of love
And I’m not sure if I can resurrect you
I’m walking up to you so slowly
It’s about time, it’s about time to fly away, but wait
I swear it’s different cause I’m lonely
Fold your wings, you’ll need them more one day
His room is cold now and it hurts like hell
He holds tight, he stares
It’s almost over and it’s running through his head
They don’t know me, they don’t know more than I show
It’s about time, it’s about time to fly away, but wait
This one is different cause she’s lonely
Fold your wings, you’ll need them more one day

I love this song because it reminds me of myself and my fear of letting someone get too close.
Fundamentally, it's about the fact that actions are much more important than words. Both the boy and girl from the first two verses know that they aren't loved, even though they might have people saying that they love them, because they have never shown their true selves to anyone. The words mean nothing without the actions to back them up.
Also, the lyric "There've been too many times when I've drowned you with these perfect lines," shows that even if you say all the right things, it doesn't matter if your actions aren't backing up your words.
The ultimate courageous and meaningful action for both the characters is not running away from the opportunity to love one another. Before, they might have "flown away" because of their fear of intimacy, but they recognized the loneliness in each other and stayed to give it a shot.
this is my own interpretation of the song, in the context of my life.
one more day down these stairs his room is cold now and it hurts like hell he holds tight, he stares its almost over and its running through his head they dont know me they dont know more than i show
shes walking up to him so slowly its about time, its about time to fly away but wait, this one is different 'cause shes lonely fold your wings, youll need them more one day
to me, this is the boy saying he's going to kill himself. "one more day down these stairs" and "it's almost over" seem to be referring that this is his last day on earth and he doesn't have to deal with his loneliness anymore, since he never truly connected with anyone enough to reveal his true self. he also states "it's about time to fly away," possibly from this world. he then sees or meets a girl, and he sees that she is different from anyone he has met before because she is like him, and he decides that he wont kill himself, so he folds his wings knowing that he'll leave this world another day, but not just yet.

the girl in the song is a girl who has done regrettable things in her past, mainly involving sleeping with a lot of men in order to find the right one. she eventually realizes that the men she sleeps with obviously don't love her because she's never shown her true self, just as the boy, she's only shown her smile, which i'm interpreting as her good looks, before they hop into bed. she meets the boy from the earlier verse and just as she's about to 'fly away' she realizes that he is going through the same issues that she has.
and honestly i have no clue how to interpret the first person verses, i can't even surely determine who is narrating it. anyway, that is my own personal interpretation of it, i hope someone else sees it the way i do.
there’ve been too many times when i’ve drowned you with these perfect lines and you’ve heard me say that i can cure you this morning i woke up with this overwhelming fear of love and i’m not sure if i can resurrect you
That gives me shivers every time. I think this song is about being lonely. And I absolutely agree with what blackat16 said.
what a beautiful song omgosh!!! his voice is amazing and the meaning is so touching and kind of makes me sad..
loooove it man. the music video was a little confusing for me tho. At least the lyrics were explained thoroughly
jeahjeah sunflowerradio,
it gives me chills too.
"she’s walking up to him so slowly it’s about time, it’s about time to fly away but wait, this one is different 'cause she’s lonely fold your wings, you’ll need them more one day"
I'm probably totally wrong, but what these lyrics mean to me is that the girl [or guy in the other version] knows he needs to leave his lover, but hes lonely and is afraid to, so he "folds up his wings" for one more day- he doesn't fly away this time.
I guess I'm a little biased because I went through that a little while ago, but when I heard this beautiful song, that's what I thought of...
And the end, the "And fold your wings, you'll need them more another day" is like saying that she should save her courage, because she'll need it mroe later.

I don't know, just my interpretation :/

I believe this song is about eventually breaking up and the lonliness you must feel after. Also some people have trouble getting over their ex's some want them back i think its that.

those times where you just want to crumble and tell your ex how bad you wish they didn't leave or you didn't leave

"fold your wings,...
"fold your wings, you’ll need them more one day" i think that says like save your courage like imnotfromsandiago said but i think it means resist tempptation build your strength . Cause you will need to do it several times. especially if he were to try to get you back.
The lonliness theme also plays in but yea thats what i think.
i think she left him cause he played and lied told her he loved her and fed her these perfect lines.
This song gave me the chills when I heard an acoustic version of it because i could really focus and the lyrics. I agree with blackat16. It reminds me of my own struggles.
To me, this is a story about two people who push everyone away. "They can't love me, they can't love what they don't show" That's the exact kind of problem people have with their own families.
one more day down these stairs his room is cold now and it hurts like hell he holds tight, he stares its almost over and its running through his head they dont know me they dont know more than i show
To me, the loneliness comes from broken ties with the people who should love you-- your family. And then it leaves you broken. And these two people are looking for something in each other to fill what they've lost in their own lives. "but wait, this one's different cause she's lonely"-- they need each other.
But even though these people hurt the same way, anything between them won't work out because they can't open up.
and youve heard me say that i can cure you this morning i woke up with this overwhelming fear of love and im not sure if i can resurrect you
Like all of you said, the whole empty words without actions comes into play, when they realize they can't fix each other, because they're scared of the very same thing--Love. So sad. Heartbreaking in its own sense of irony.
When I first listened to the lyrics in this song, I thought they were about two people (the guy in the first verse and the girl in the second) who normally sleep around with lots of different people, but then they find each other, and they want to "fold their wings." In other words, they are actually falling in love rather than lust.

The last chorus when it switches from third to first person caught me off guard. At first, I believed that the narrator was the guy from the first verse the whole time, but when I thought about it, I thought that the singer was using all the other verses and choruses to make a point to someone he cares about. Someone he want to let know that he doesn't only lust her, but loves her.
This is kind of a different view than the other ideas that have been posted, but my friend and I discussed it for an hour or so, and this is the conclusion we came up with. I like all the ideas that have been posted on here, especially blackat16's. The greatest part about it, though, is that none of us are right. Each individual will get something different out of the song, and that's what, ultimately, makes it such a wonderful song.

I agree with most of you guys. Seriously this song is so perfect.
I listened to this song almost everyday last summer. It came on shuffle this morning and I instantly remembered why. If you like a cappella, feel free to check out my group's (the Penny Loafers) cover of it! www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-ArFrWQKGY
