For me, personally, this song is about pushing people away, especially in family life. 'Fall out of trees' When we're younger we climb trees, so I really think this is about loss of innocence / moving on from childhood. Here's this person who has dropped out of his childhood and into the real world to find himself all a lone. Probably because he's pushed everyone out of his life.
Then 'i saw a ghost, i think it was me' he's feeling lost in himself because of this. A half life. And getting out of town is about escape before, I think, finally going back home. And having the people you knew help you back up. Guide you. Your fate is in their hands: 'but now its up to them to carry me back up to the top'. Carry him back to where he was as a child.
