Foam Hands Lyrics

True love regrets to inform you
There are certain things you must do
To perceive his face in the stains on the wall

I didn't know what time it was at all
I didn't know what time it was at all
Foam hands

Since you been gone
Since you been gone
Me and the king have been steadily growing apart
He lives down the hall

I didn't know what time it was at all
I didn't know what time it was at all
Foam hands

I'm not the kind to tell you what is true
And what is totally out of control
I didn't know what time it was at all
I didn't know what time it was at all
Foam hands

I think this song is beautiful. To me, it speaks of the loss of someone special (death, distance, ending relationship, etc). How you can't make someone stay no matter how hard you try...its out of your control from that point on. "Foam hands".....everything just slips right through.

This song always struck me as being about the dissolving of a relationship between a father and a son after the death of the mother. I know this is relatively specific and I myself admit that Dan leaves a beautiful amount of distance to his songs so you can internalize them how you want and make them your own. That said I always envisioned the Foam hands being like your mom washing the dishes, and yes it is terribly sexist to say that, but it is my personal feelings. Also I think the foam is a padding between the boy and his harsh father. Just my take on it. Either way it is hauntingly brilliant

this song makes me want to cry or something its got that good old "inspirational feel"

i think it is about the narrator (i can't assume it is bejar) unintentionally diminishing his communication he had with god or whomever he believed in spiritually near the end of a relationship with a woman.

"true love regrets to inform you"

  • this line seems like a harsh acknowledgement of the negative reprecussions and effects of being in love.

"there are certain things you must do, to percieve his face in the stains on the wall"

  • i think what he is arguing here is that the distraction of being in love and losing that person has gotten in the way of his communication with god. i think the line regarding 'percieving his face on the wall' is a reference to people claiming to have seen christ, the virgin mary, or even god on things like wall stains, tortillas, etc... the point is that he was having trouble finding religious inspiration (maybe even a lack of faith) after losing his significant other.

"i didn't know what time it was at all"

  • this is hard to explain. perhaps he is explaining his ignorance to all of the time he waisted missing the one he lost while ignoring his spiritual superior, or maybe it is a much more literal reference that couldn't be explained without further knowledge of his situation.

"foam hands"

  • my favorite line, and great song title. i think this means that he is dwelling on what he had but had let slip through his fingers, like foam. he had held his relationship with this woman AND god, and let them both slip away simultaneously through "foam hands," as if they just passed through them effortlessly.
My Interpretation

@af3976 I think the thought of losing time has a lot to be said. One let's enough time go, and suddenly it's all passed them by. This delay caused by his lack of caring (taking the time in the relationship) thus everything drops through foam hands.
