Drunk or Dead Lyrics
Little did I know it then
The pictures on the heads of pins
‘Be easier than living is
Easier to watch you die
Lost what little luck was left
It’s not enough to pay the rent
Not enough to force repentance
Not enough to make you pray
And don’t tell me ‘bout the sins of man
I’ve felt the sting of God’s right hand
I find him after school in bed
And don’t know if he’s drunk or dead
A slow but steady breath means
Live to wreck another day
It’s terrible to cross my mind
That I should do him in this time
And I could find a better life
Become a burden on the state
You can’t run when it’s all you know
You’ll just have to wait to go
And you can’t hurt me ‘cause I’ve been true
Your horrid life caught up to you
But I got bruises that you can’t see
If there’s a god, take him from me.
The pictures on the heads of pins
‘Be easier than living is
Easier to watch you die
It’s not enough to pay the rent
Not enough to force repentance
Not enough to make you pray
I’ve felt the sting of God’s right hand
And don’t know if he’s drunk or dead
A slow but steady breath means
Live to wreck another day
That I should do him in this time
And I could find a better life
Become a burden on the state
You’ll just have to wait to go
Your horrid life caught up to you
If there’s a god, take him from me.

First of all I love this song and album. I have two feelings about this song. This first idea is that the song is about a friend/loved one is continuing to hurt the narrator. The friend has taken a wrong road in life. The narrator has tried to help but can not get the friend to change and he can not deal with the issues anymore.
My second theory is pretty close to the first, but I really think the song is song about the narrator himself. He sees his alter ego and knows it is wrong how he acts, but cant change. He considers suicide or just drowning his sorrows in alcohol. I think to me the last line is what leaves me to believe this theory. I don't believe a person ask god to take a friend from them, but you would ask god to change yourself.
Who knows songs rarely mean what you think they do.
The song to me is close to as you see it, although I think it's about a father. To become a burden on the state means that you were taken from your parents or parent in this case by child services, the child was abused but he's strong but isn't sure on himself
