And You Lied To Me Lyrics
All the dangerous games you played out after dark
They never asked, or forced to hold you down
In the chamber where you built all those radios
In the years that passed from forty one to forty five
And the neighbours asked you to take those antennas down
Those are eyesores, eyesores
Left in, in-between the wars
You aren't even who you said you are
All the sporting goods you once sold on Mondays
All the bolts and balls couldn't satisfy your interest
All the things you tried but that remind you of the day
When you went around defusing bombs
Changing into costume to follow all the criminals in the land
Who'd ever thought you'd join a band
You aren't even who you said you are
And you lied to me, you aren't even who you said you are
When you went around defusing bombs
Changing into costume to follow all the criminals in the land
Who'd ever thought you'd join a band
They never asked, or forced to hold you down
In the chamber where you built all those radios
And the neighbours asked you to take those antennas down
Those are eyesores, eyesores
All the bolts and balls couldn't satisfy your interest
All the things you tried but that remind you of the day
Changing into costume to follow all the criminals in the land
Who'd ever thought you'd join a band
And you lied to me, you aren't even who you said you are
Changing into costume to follow all the criminals in the land
Who'd ever thought you'd join a band

Wow, how has no one commented on this song, I think it is one of the best songs on the album, it is so beautiful, but also powerful.
I'd love to know what the meaning behind and the source of the muffled female voice throughout is..
Great song.
I thought it was about a break-up because of the line "you aren't even who you said you are". The narrator reproaching his girlfriend to have lied to him about her personnality. But I'm not sure.
Great song though!
Great song by a great band. I really enjoy this album a lot.
It sounds like they're talking about a spy from the second world war because it mentions 44-45 and radios built underground and concealing identities...but it could mean nothing...the line about joining a band throws me off.
They playfully mix up espionage and relationships metaphorically. "And you lied to me... you aren't even who you said you are" is certainly something that would be said to a spy OR a lover. This idea was maybe first introduced with the 1954 Anais Nin novel "Spy in the House of Love" -- which interestingly has been broadly used as a metaphor in music along the decades. "Spy in the House of Love" is such an appealing metaphor that it's become the title of different songs by many artists - Steve Winwood, Was (Not Was), the dBs, Animal Logic.
