The Bug Parade Lyrics

The lips I've been watching are yours
You and your mom are talking about lord knows
Dim lights in the kitchen, the TV's so low
The lips I've been watching are moving slowly

For the first time, I'm glad you're not including me
I couldn't speak if you did, I'm staring at your lips

The bugs at my back porch light, like confetti on my head
This makes me shake, should have stayed at your place
But I have to work, and you've got to study, this boy is not spent, forever unlucky
Minutes away, but miles apart

For the first time, I'm glad you're not including me
I couldn't speak if you did, I'm staring at your lips
I hope your mom isn't looking at me, and thinking "What the fuck's he staring at?"
Of course, it's just these late night talks with you, late night drives alone

And I find it amusing, frustrating and confusing
I left the way that I did
Defeated and dismissed

I should have stayed with you
Minutes away but miles apart

I think he's in love with a girl but they don't have time to see each other properly hence the "I've got to work and you've got to study" and they've decided not to go out with each other, but have remained friends. He's gone round to hers and they're sitting talking with each other and the girl's mum, but all he can do is stare at her lips and think about how much he likes her. He meets up to talk with her, but always leaves alone hence "late night talks with you, late night drives alone". He leaves without letting her know how he feels.

I think this song is about having a unrequited crush on a next door neighbor. It's actually kind of peeping tom-ish.

It's about how the girl says she loves him and gives him attention when they're not in person- but when they're together she makes up excuses to have him leave, and to not spend time together. He realizes all this when he remembers how her mother visits/they visit her, and she does not include him in the conversations.

i suppose.
