A fairly straightforward song about a guy about to break up with his girlfriend. I believe he realized she was cheating on him and felt she would be happier with the other man. He still had residual feelings for her but felt there was no other alternative. It was something he "must" do for him and her. Don't quite understand the "is separate himself from you" part.
