This song, although its a love song to his sweetheart, makes me think of my Best friend, and how me and her love each other, but i have to leave off to college, but ill be back home in the spring, and then we can be together again, cause we already miss each other, so i think of it as more of the longer the waiting the sweeter the kiss of friendship is, and its a promise from me to her that ill be back, unless i literally cant. ...the bagpipes in this song, make me cry.
So I know this song is for his wife. I take it a little different. I haven't had a boyfriend and I'm 19 (haha). The song says "The Longer the Waiting, the Sweeter this Kiss. It's better my darlin', I Promise You this." It lets me know that the longer I wait for that special guy, the better it is for me and all I need is patience. Such a beautiful song! :)
i think this song is about him dying and waiting for her to go to heaven where they’ll meet again. it sounds like he is on the death bed with constant references to him “going soon” also “You can marry another, and it's alright with me“ this lyric reminds me of elderly people remarrying after their spouse dies.
